Book Description

1 and up
All the fun of a baby's day, from "wakey light, wakey light, creeping through window" till "time to sleep tight" is captured in this wonderful collection of poems from the acclaimed poet and children's author John Agard. Bold, colorful illustrations picture baby's bath time, mealtime, playtime, and potty time, and entrance even the very youngest readers. Written especially for babies, the poems are sweet, funny, and short, infused with a vibrant Calypso spirit, and with a rhythmic cadence perfect for reading aloud.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1–Ten four-line rhymes tell of a baby's day from morning to bedtime. The verses are simple, some with a staccato rhythm; others have softer sounds. However, there is an awkwardness due to some unusual word choices, possibly reflecting the book's British origins. For instance: "One day I'll sit botty/on what they call potty./Now I do in cotty/what I call a dotty." The brightly textured illustrations are heavy in crosshatching. The child who is the focal point looks to be a different age from one picture to the next. Overall, it is doubtful that the intended audience will be drawn to either the verses or the art. Pass this by, and give parents one of many great Mother Goose books instead.– Elaine Lesh Morgan, Multnomah County Library, Portland, OR
