5.0 out of 5 stars Pure magic, December 17, 1999

That Fred Barton, Elena Bennett, and these songs should find each other is nothing short of magical. The orchestrations are lush and beautiful, the songs go from vamp to ballad without a hitch, and Elena's voice is pure joy. Every song, including some obscurities (Burt Bacharach's "You're Following Me") and some standards ("Fools Rush In") is exquisite. If you have any love of the classic tunes, this is a must-have album! If you have a chance to see Elena and Fred live, make sure you don't pass 'em up.

This album defines a bygone and brings it to life once more. It's only a matter of time before we start hearing a lot more about Ms. Bennett and her accomplishments. This CD is a wonderful at a party or for romance. Simply fantastic!

5.0 out of 5 stars At Last !, November 5, 1999

I've heard Elena Bennet sing in the clubs in New York, and she is amazing! She has an extremely powerful voice, that is sexy and exciting and everything in between. The arrangements are terrific, and stand out on their own. The uptempo numbers on this album will make you want to dance, thanks to Barton's hot musical treatments and the ballads will make you shiver. I can't wait until these two do another album. For any fan of this style of music, or any style of female vocalist music, for that matter, *don't* miss this one!

I am an piano player/singer myself. I recently met Elena and fell in love with her personality. I listened to her cd and fell in love with her voice. I love the classics and she does them with such perfection. The arrangements are fresh, full and beautiful. She has a very Judy Garland type voice but yet a style all her own. You will love this cd.

The fidelity of this CD is great and the lady really belts out the tunes. Not boring like many Benny Goodman CD of this genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars A voice not to be missed, June 26, 2010

Every once in a while, you hear a singer so special that you think, thank whatever gods may be that this person took up singing. How much poorer the world would be without this voice. Such is Elena Bennett.

Her compilation, "A Wrinkle in Swingtime," could possibly even convert me to a cabaret/old standards fan. (That's saying something for someone who usually has old British Prog Rock in the car.)

I can almost see Ms. Bennett strutting around a la Mae West as she sings "The Lady From 29 Palms." Her voice is seasoned beyond her years. In fact it's a jolt to see her young pretty face in the package photos. The conductor Fred Barton rightly arranged some beefy horns (there's some impeccable trombone work) behind her soulful alto. The recording mix is perfect.

Ms. Bennett can range from swagger to sweetness, and has chosen a great collection of off-the-beaten-path tunes. From someone who is NOT a fan of this genre, I highly recommend "A Wrinkle in Swingtime."
