4.0 out of 5 stars Amusing childrens book, August 8, 2001
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I first read this book when I was very young in a scholastic bound edition. It has some very, very simple codes and cyphers explained very easily with simple, amusing illustrations. Basic substitutions, "invisible" ink, and the like. You won't find discussion of PGP, TripleDES or RSA Encryption here; the book is aimed at your precocious 7-10 year old. One of the codes in here I have used for nearly twenty years to keep my notes private, and I can write it as fast as english! Looking back at it, the book is a little silly, but I remember it as a great favorite. Take this review with a grain of salt- the Author, John Lawrence Peterson, is my grandfather. @--William Lawrence Peterson

5.0 out of 5 stars An understandable introduction to secret codes that will allow new generations to share in the fun of passing secrets, February 27, 2010
Like a large percentage of other boys, I was a member of a club in elementary school and we created our own secret code to send messages. It was great fun when Scott and I passed our messages and other boys wanted to join our club so that they could also send messages.
This book will appeal to all children with a similar mindset, it demonstrates the basics of the simplest of codes and how to use them. Reading it brought back memories of the joy we obtained from writing our messages and after reading this book, new generations of children can share in the fun.
