5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly helpful.. October 6, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
There are thousands of books for writers to improve their work. Many miss the mark, are poorly written themselves or simply don't help.
Well, not this one. LJ Martin has put together a very helpful guide or checklist for any author of any genre. It's definitely something to keep by your side as you work to help you avoid the many common pitfalls writers can fall into as their stories unfold.
I'm delighted to have this in my reference library and I'm sure you will be too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent learning tool January 4, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Anyone who writes, thinks they want to write, or is afraid to try writing - GET THIS BOOK! I was pleased to find an "instruction" book without so much technical jargon that I ended the book lost. This book moves any author/would be author through a number of important issues with ease. There are understandable definitions, examples, and tons of resource links/addresses. L.J. Martin has hit the nail on the head with this book and I would highly recommend it to anyone who has the slightest desire to write. I feel like I can't say enough to express how helpful and informative it was for me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Guide October 19, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This guide was very helpful and useful in picking up tips. I own several other writing books and this one seemed to get to the point quickly. It was easy to pick up several wow tips and apply them. After reviewing the section on conflict two days ago I immediately learned what I needed to change in my writing. I applied that to a new chapter in a fiction series I am starting and my editor immediately noticed the difference. She said that it was much more engaging than past work. This makes the book a true winner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Words of Wisdom from an Author I Trust October 9, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I've enjoyed both Kat and L.J. Martin's writing style over the years and was pleased to learn of Larry's "How To" book. My Kindle couldn't recharge fast enough to suit me as I paced around the house doing small tasks until, finally, I saw the green ready light appear. Larry J. Martin has a style and a strength in his written works--comparable to no one else I have read--of the Western Historical genre, that suits my female inclinations for strong, fearless and principled leading men. Larry Martin writes from the heart. He writes what he knows and what he's lived. He is authentic. I am honored to finally own a manual by a beloved and revered author who is willing, patient and kind enough to walk me through the confusing maze of how to take thoughts, plots and scenarios and make them MINE in written form. For the seasoned veteran who could use a 'refresher' to the nervous novice attempting their first jot and tittle...this book is a must have! You will refer to L.J. Martin's "How To Write..." time and again. The book will serve you well as a keyboard companion as you pound out @ 60 wpm that great story inside of you or you do it with the Hunt and Peck method! Good Luck to all! (Shay McLaughlin, Missoula, Montana)

A friendly and informative view of the fiction writing process marred somewhat by inaccuracies and editing errors. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the insights and view of his experiences.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Diamond in the Rough - FOR REAL! November 27, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Writing Compelling Fiction by L.J. Martin is the book you need to read if you are serious about writing successful fiction for publication. It's evident Martin is an accomplished writer that knows his stuff! What I found most valuable are the references used throughout this guide. The specific examples of what the heck he's talking about and what "not" and "to" do. Trust me when I say his concepts and direction, tips and tricks and words of advice are INVALUABLE.
The author shows you step-by-step, start to finish everything you need to consider in order to write a good fiction novel. I recommend all serious fiction writers read through this book and let Martin know what you've gained. Nice job Martin!
