5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the best "how-to" greeting card book out there!
If you're going to get only one, this is it! I spent 20 at Hallmark in the Creative Writing and Editing departments, so I feel I know whereof I speak. The book is very user-friendly; the writing is fun, friendly and concise. While it covers all types of greeting card writing, it gives a special emphasis in the new humor and alternative styles of writing. And...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not what I thought it would be
I was quite disappointed with this book in that it was extremely limited in its topics. It was very thorough in its explanation of different writing styles and formats, but it barely discussed the marketing side of it...payment standards, format for submissions. I would have liked this section to be more than just a few pages(out of almost 200), and also for them to...

While it covers all types of greeting card writing, it gives a special emphasis in the new humor and alternative styles of writing. And for those of you who want to start your own button or bumpersticker or t-shirt company in your garage, there is an excellent section on this type of writing, we call "Self-Expression." With the hundreds of Electronic Greetings sites now out there, the opportunity for personal creativity is greater than ever. Armed with this book, you'll become a true professional.

4.0 out of 5 stars A book worth a look, February 18, 2001

This review is from: How to Write and Sell Greeting Cards, Bumper Stickers, T-Shirts and Other Fun Stuff (Paperback)
I am a greeting card designer and writer. Molly's book sometimes states the obvious in her suggestions for creating greeting cards, but when are looking for the millioneth way of wishing someone a happy birthday, that can be helpful. She walks you through brainstorming and I have to say has enabled me a very fresh thought process for coming up with card copy. It's as though she is happy to share the "secrets" of the trade for creating cards. This is one funky business to learn about. It's not like there are college courses on how to succeed in the card business. It's all about observing what's out there and really searching for professinals who are willing to share insights, tips and suggestions and hard facts for succeeding and I think this book does all of that!

I would have liked this section to be more than just a few pages(out of almost 200), and also for them to have included a little bit on basic overall card design (many of us do both the writing and illustrating).

This book is not an end-all resource on breaking into the greeting card industry, but it is a good place to go if having trouble coming up with ideas.

If you're interested in writing greeting card and related text this is the book to have. It explains the type of writing neeeded by greeting card companies. The book also tells the best way to market your proposed ideas. At the end of the book are "Idea Starter" pages to help you get the creative juices flowing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Look for me at Hallmark, November 15, 2002
This review is from: How to Write and Sell Greeting Cards, Bumper Stickers, T-Shirts and Other Fun Stuff (Paperback)
Just kidding. You won't find my cards at Hallmark.
This is a great book for people who love greeting cards. I feel so stupid when I'm at the store by myself and other people are around and I start laughing at a card. They just stare at me and wish their card was so funny. But I am easily humored. If you are creative, this is a great book. She gives you ideas and tips, but doesn't do it all for you. She leaves room for your creativity.

4.0 out of 5 stars Helpful little book, April 29, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: How to Write and Sell Greeting Cards, Bumper Stickers, T-Shirts and Other Fun Stuff (Paperback)
This small book is a few years old and so does not contain up-to-date info about publishing on demand (POD - online) which, of course, is a relatively new and growing segment of the merchandising world. However, if you just need some good tips about how to create the wording, etc for greeting cards, t-shirts and the like, this little book will be helpful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow, what a great book!, April 29, 2008
This review is from: How to Write and Sell Greeting Cards, Bumper Stickers, T-Shirts and Other Fun Stuff (Paperback)
Yippee!! Great information! Should have bought this book years ago when I first saw it! Good ideas, brainstorming ideas, lots of industry information & written in a light-hearted, easy-to-read format. She recommends getting a rhyming dictionary, she includes sample forms and a workbook section. She tries to really encourage you and get you to think and work at it. She believes that if we think we have the ability to come up with good prose to give it a serious try, but she doesn't promise the moon as far as earning a living wage at this. I'll be doing it for the love of it, not my bread & butter job. I am now really eager to get started with her guidance. I can't believe I tried to do this type of work without Ms. Wigand's book. Thanks Ms. W!

While written in 1992, this is still a solid introduction to freelance writing for the "social expression" market. With first hand experience, the author gives very useful information and examples for writing and selling greeting cards and related items. It's well worth the read.
