Through NetGalley, McGraw-Hill Professional was kind enough to share a copy of this eGalley for the purposes of my reading and reviewing it. Although it was provided to me at no cost, I am under no obligation to give a positive review.

While I typically review books that interest me in order to provide the publisher and author with an honest review from someone who is hopefully within their target market, I've yet to run across a review opportunity that was so perfectly timed.

You see, this is a book that helps high school students write the best possible college application essays, and here I sit with my younger son a high school junior with incredible college potential (he wants to go to med school and is more than capable). So not only do I get to review the book, but I get a great opportunity to see if this is something I would like to get in print format for my son.

That answer, by the way, is a resounding yes.

I have always been a proponent of empowering our children, and I've been even more adamant about that following the death of my wife two years ago. Since I don't know when my time will come, my boys have to be as prepared for life as possible.

One of things I really like about this book is Barash expects parents to be almost completely hands-off in the process. Encourage. Offer suggestions when asked, and only when asked. But under no circumstances fix the writing, not even a comma. Once you start doing that, it's a slippery slope toward the parent being the author instead of the child. And if our children are going to be independent in college, why not start now?

The most important thing is the story must be in your child's voice.

I purchased this for my high school senior son, and he gives it a thumbs up. He has stressed over writing college admissions essays, claiming he has nothing to say. What I - and he! - like about this is that it's a workbook and it forces him to think about his life and experience in a way that he can discover things to write about. Colleges want to know who you are, what you will bring to their campus, and what they can do for you. This book helps kids write essays that address those three elements. Here's hoping the boy gets accepted by his college of choice!

College application essays are notoriously challenging. Students are advised to "be themselves," write naturally, and show who they really are. Simultaneously, they must somehow make a unique impression, revealing magical personal qualities that render them special, shining assets to the college. Students struggle to describe their signature experiences - the big game they won, the big game they lost, their emotionally moving community service or the science fair prize. It's a depressing project, indeed.

"Write Out Loud," a new guide to the college application essay, takes a very different approach - shaking up the equation, and in so doing, guide students to write terrific essays. The book is based on the "Story to College" essay writing workshop program created by author Carol Barash. Barash, a graduate of Yale and Princeton, had two seminal experiences in the evolution of her program: As faculty advisor at Rutgers University, she read and evaluated thousands of college applicants' essays and came to know all too well the difference between the uninspiring average essay and the rare gem. She could also relate, however, to the middling efforts: As a high school student, she had been told that she wasn't much of a writer, either. It was a challenge that she took on, discovering in the process what makes writing real, powerful and evocative. For the past few years, Barash has been sharing those lessons in her workshops and online in a Udemy course. Now it's all in the book, too.

"Write Out Loud" is different from most college application essay how-to's. For one thing, it's big, like an old-school magazine: tall and wide. That's because it's a workbook designed for students to write in, advancing through exercises of introspection and discovery as they read.

The hard truth is that admission into a selective college shares many characteristics of a lottery. Too many applicants, not enough differentiating them from each other, and weary humans at the other end of the process incapable of superhuman feats of discernment and prognostication. The real chance you have as an applicant is to tell a unique story in your application essay that catches the eye of one of those weary humans, the deans of admission. But high school students are afraid of telling unique stories -- most of them are too busy trying to be like everyone else, fitting in. That makes your essay even more of an opportunity to shine, uniquely and individually. Write Out Loud takes you through the process of creating a unique essay, and it is your ticket to admission to the college of your dreams. With everything else on the line, don't fail to get this book and follow its advice.

There's a lot of mediocre and even BAD advice out there about how to write a college essay. The typical essay has lots of trite stuff in it that puts admissions officers to SLEEP. College admissions officers see a TON of essays, and when they see yet another one that says "and then one day I realized," their eyes glaze over.

This book teaches you the secrets to writing a college essay that make you stand out and will help get you into your choice colleges. It's a fun book too where you'll learn about how to tell your story in other settings in your life, like job interviews.
