5.0 out of 5 stars Funny! Great for teachers and others who work with or just enjoy children, December 7, 2010

This review is from: Write Me a Poem Baby (Paperback)
H. Allen Smith has been gone for some time and I have bitterly missed him. I recall reading his short "Whap, whap, Twist, Twist" in Readers Digest years ago - a method for opening stubborn jars. I also used to check out his book from the library as a teen whenever I had been too stressed and needed a gut-wrenching laugh. It was a book with Spoonerisms and malaprops galore that just slayed me. Unfortunately I can't remember which book it was! Write Me a Poem, Baby is a very funny book, similar to Don't Get Perconel With a Chicken, both collections of essays and poems written by children, complete with their own spellings and grammar. I bought them for my daughter who is studying speech pathology and likewise loves words and what children do with them. But I have been reading and rereading them at the end of the day when I need a laugh.

His humor is never dated. He was just a funny man who loved to observe and record his observations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun Reading for the Whole Family, May 20, 2007

This review is from: Write Me a Poem, Baby (Hardcover)
This is one of the funniest books I have ever read. I give copies to family members at Christmas and for their birthdays. H. Allen Smith is so clever, so droll, yet always respectful of the youngsters who have written the gems in this collection. The Thanksgiving poem written by a 10 year old is read aloud at our Thanksgiving dinners.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thumbs up For Poem Baby, May 2, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Write me a poem, baby
H. Allen Smith showcases some of the most delightful examples of children's writings in "Write Me a Poem Baby." Primarily focused on letters and short manucripts, it does include a few poems by children authors. While Smith's writing as a humorist is subdued, he allows the kid's writtings to take the spotlight.
