Laura Wilson, M.A., is the founder and CEO of the nationally recognized online test-preparation company, WilsonDailyPrep, and of WilsonPrep, a premier tutoring agency in Chappaqua, New York. In addition to more than twenty years of teaching English and tutoring high-school students for the SAT and ACT, she regularly consults closely with other English teachers, supervising and mentoring them in the classroom. She often consults with school districts, using her original curriculum guides to infuse grammar, reading, and writing skills into the study of high-school literary classics. In 2010, she founded Graph It Forward Today, an organization that donates graphing calculators to students and schools in need. I loved this book when I first discovered it because it had specific strategies that really worked for the SAT. But unfortunately the College Board diligently reads all of these guides and constantly changes its tests to make sure that the tricks no longer work. I have always preferred a more flexible strategy than the extensive memorization promoted by this book, but now a flexible strategy is imperative. The College Board has started to deviate from these standard essay themes and to add twists to them so that the strategies in this book can no longer be applied as easily.
That said, these strategies will still be useful if you use them as a guide to what could show up and make sure that you are ready for prompts that deviate significantly from what is promised by this guide. You can still use the outlines in the back to put together details from a selection of excellent books, historical examples and personal experiences. And even writing out how they apply to the standard themes can be very helpful. I would just spend less time on these themes and more time trying to use your selections with the essay prompts given on the most recent SAT's. These are available on the College Board website.
So the bottom line is that this is still a good guide with some helpful strategies, but it should be used with the knowledge that the essay prompts now vary more than this book suggests.

I've never been great at school, and English was always my worst subject. I don't think I've gotten anything above a B since 2nd grade. I also suck at writing. My mom bought this book for me after the first time I took the SATs because I didn't do well and a family friend had recommended this book. I didn't start looking at it until after the second time I took the SATs and the tutor I was using hadn't helped me increase my scores at all. This is book is so accessible and not condescending AT ALL! It made me feel like a real person was telling me these things and it was all sssoooo simple. I really liked how everything was broken down into sections that were easy for me to understand and nothing was thrown at me all at once. Also, the book was great with highlighting, bolding and separating the most important information so the night before my last SAT I could flip through and be reminded of everything. Not only did it increase my SAT scores, it helped raise my English grade a HUGE amount! No joke, I credit this book for getting me into the college of my dreams and I know I will use this book in college too. GREAT BOOK! EASY TO UNDERSTAND! BEST ESSAY BOOK EVER, EVER! Should be required reading!

This book is an SAT essay bible, it is loaded with various examples on a number of prompts and the ten secrets are fabulous. My SAT essay score improved by 2 points and this book has taught me how to write an essay the way Collegeboard wants it. The samples range from personal to historical and fictional ones, and I promise they are brilliant in content and accurately scored.
This is a must buy for any student struggling with writing an SAT essay. You could look inside the book first if you are dubious whether to make a purchase or not.
