I've had the chance to do a complete read-through of WRITE OR WRONG, and it's simply delightful. Manning's passion for his work and the medium, his clear dedication to sharing his wisdom with others who wish to create, his candor about the "hard knocks" he's taken both personally and professionally along the way, his self-deprecating humor and wit, his drive for excellence and desire to help build a community that is collaborative, inclusive and committed to the success of creator-owned projects rings through from cover to cover, and makes the material inviting, approachable and, ultimately, inspiring. And, one needn't be an aspiring comics creator to enjoy the hell out of it - I have no desire to create comics, but I've loved every page and look forward to reading it again and again.
WRITE OR WRONG is a must-own for any aspiring comics creator, and a more-than-enjoyable read for those of us who just love the medium.

I have just finished reading Write or Wrong: a writer's guide to creating comics by Dirk Manning. The first thing that I can tell you right off the bat is that I wish that I had read this book 3 to 4 years ago. For anyone going through the process of just starting out on the journey to actively trying to produce a comic book this book reads like a roadmap to success.

Don't get me wrong there aren't false claims or promises that reading this book will make you successful. What it does do, is to teach you how to be successful in a very professional way,so that you present yourself and your work in the right manner. Ultimately moving you towards your goal of being published.

More importantly the book makes you feel less alone on your journey. Becoming a comic book creator and a writer can infact seem like a very lonely process. Often fueled by a desire and a belief in oneself it can take years before you truly have anything to show for all your work. This book celebrates the idea of being a writer as well as gives us, the reader, a reality check about how hard it truly is to create a comic from an idea.

As I said this book makes no promises, but it does educate us, and teaches us how to be truly informed creators. And as Creators of ideas we can use that knowledge, to make those ideas come to life.

This is the type of book that you can't put down. I found myself compelled to finish the book in a single day. There is a tempo that you just don't want to interrupt while reading this book. If you're anything like me you will be taking notes all the way through and writing down page numbers that you know you have to go back to re-examine after you're done.

As a veteran writer of comics, with over 25 experience in the field, one would think I knew everything there is to know about the craft of comic creating. The secret to my longevity, however, is that I always consider myself not just a practioner of the craft, but a student of it, as well. That's why I can't recommend this book enough. Manning's tips, his anecdotes, his sharing of "lessons learned" are fun and informative. This is a must-read for anyone considering a career in comics, or even as just a fan of the medium. It's well written and very engaging and, who knows? You might, like me, learn a couple new tricks!

Aspiring comic book writer here, studying comics in university. Bought this book upon recommendation from professor and I think it's great - it's really useful. It gives a lot of insight into comics writing and the formats to follow. This is great for anyone who writes comics, or just enjoys writing.

Do you stand in line at conventions for hours waiting to ask just one question? Do you sometimes not understand what a pro is trying to tell you in the 30 seconds they have to answer your question? Dirk Manning's 'Write or Wrong' is a spectacularly executed collection of chapters outlining exactly what it is like to try to break into the comics business. He gives amazing advice on how to go from an idea to a finished product, and outlines the pitfalls that may come to anyone along the way. It's a different take on the business, and a much needed refreshing one at that. This is a no holds barred in your face truth fest of logic and reality. From chapters called 'How badly do you want it?" to 'Are you really that good?", it gives anyone with ideas of going into the comic business a much needed jolt of honesty. I would highly reccommend this book to anyone intererested in the comics industry or those already in the industry. I learned a lot, and you will too!

I have a confession to make: I may not be the world's biggest fan of comic books. Now, don't get me wrong. I do read them and I certainly enjoy them. There's no other storytelling medium quite like it. I have a big box of `em I collected from grade school during weekly visits to my local comic shop, and I have a few dozen more volumes of great stuff balanced precariously on the headboard of my bed. What I mean is that I'm not an active collector and, to be completely honest, I don't know that I'll be attempting to create my own comic in the near future.

So, why in hell am I reviewing this book by Dirk Manning? A few reasons. One, I genuinely like Dirk a lot. He's local to my area, he's been kind enough to do print and internet radio interviews with me before, and he's very generous with his time. Two, I dig his work. He's creative, funny and, yes, has a great sense of creating drama and intriguing stories through his chosen medium. While I consider myself a fan of a few of his projects, "Nightmare World" alone has many of the best short comic stories I've ever read. Finally, I truly believe that Dirk has the experience, ability, and honesty required to help young writers have a better chance at creating comics. So if that's what you're looking for, too, buy "Write or Wrong: A Writer's Guide to Creating Comics." When you're done reading it, there's a lot of things you'll be: more knowledgeable, better prepared, and ready to get started. But what you certainly won't be is sorry.

I think it's the "honesty" part that I liked best about this book. In "Write or Wrong," based on his long-running column on Newsarama, the very last thing you can accuse Dirk of doing is mincing words. He's straightforward to the point of being blunt at times - but that's good!
