1987 0812029976 978-0812029970
Revised and brought up to date with new essays from over 50 popular colleges, this book guides college applicants step-by-step through the essay-writing process. The author advises on how to choose a topic, make a rough draft, then polish and edit the writing into an essay that conveys the student's personality, interests, and thinking. Sample essays with critiques include both winning essays and losers.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 10-12 The key word in the title of this snappy guide is ``composing.'' Ehrenhaft provides careful, complete, progressive instructions for producing an outstanding personal essay. A sensibly-organized guidebook, it is also an interesting one, filled with concise information and useful advice. Ehrenhaft doesn't just recommend revisions, he justifies the hard work they take and the positive impression they make. His enthusiastic coaching encourages college applicants to make their essays come alive, reflecting unique qualities of topic choices and writing styles. Beyond simply showing finished essay samples, Ehrenhaft offers a revealing section that gives an admissions officer's comments beside the text of four essays and a final evaluation for each. Other essays are shown in progress from initial to final draft. Even students to whom writing does not come easy will find reassurance here that they too can develop a successful essay. Writing Your College Admissions Essay (Watts, 1987) by Gerald and Eleanor Weintraub Newman and The Admissions Essay (Lyle Stuart/Citadel, 1987) by Helen W. Power and Robert DiAntonio are both good. Ehrenhaft's is better than both. Diane P. Tuccillo, Mesa Public Library, Ariz.
