Mark David Gerson's Writer's Block Unblocked can be counted as one of three books that I have read in a single sitting. Like his other works, The Voice of the Muse: Answering the Call to Write, The MoonQuest (The Q'ntana Trilogy, Part 1, Acts of Surrender: A Writer's Memoir, The Book of Messages: Writings Inspired by Melchizedek, etc., this book is engaging and highly original. At last, a remedy for the age old torture known as `writer's block'.

This book seems to masterfully weave critical elements of psychoanalysis (faith in the process), Jungian psychology (utilizing the Muse as a guide), and phenomenology (letting the writing topic `choose' the author) while being remarkably accessible. His ability to weave these threads together seamlessly and to do so with direct, practical import is impressive. All students and writers find themselves, at times, fingers hovering above the keyboard frozen. At other times, one gets locked into social media drift, or doing this and that household chore, generally stuck not doing the very thing he or she needs to accomplish: writing. Mark David Gerson strikingly makes the phenomenon of writer's block obsolete for those willing to read and follow the simple suggestions outlined in this book. My only complaint about this book is that it was not available during my past bouts of block.

I have discovered, through much toil, a few of the `outs' of writer's block outlined in this text. Writing is a challenging process for all without the added project of having to untangle the Gordian knot of writer's block. In these pages lies the solution to this malady and the way to find flow of expression and inspired writing. This book is a `must have' for students and writers of every variety.

Mark David Gerson's previous writing/self-help book The Voice of the Muse: Answering the Call to Write really helped me with my writing, so when I heard that the author had published another book, specifically dealing with the much feared `Writer's Block' I was keen to read more on how to defeat that dreaded condition.

The most important thing I learnt from reading WBU is that there really is no such thing as Writer's Block. It's something that every writer or aspiring writer thinks that is happening to them, when in fact, all one needs to do is.... keep writing. Sounds too easy to be true? I can testify that it works, and I haven't even done all the exercises that the author provides in the book. I finished WBU, picked up my laptop and wrote for several, uninterrupted hours during a long train journey - perhaps the most productive writing session I have ever had (shame that rail travel is so expensive in the U.K., otherwise I would consider it as a regular writing `venue').

If you have read VoTM some this new book's content overlaps, but WBU still contains plenty useful tips which I was able to use immediately. It still, however, all boils down to the concept of writing under the `Muse Stream', without stopping. It means writing even if you don't know the right word - just getting those words down on paper. One piece of advice that I found particularly useful as an ESL writer was the following:

"If English is not your first language and you find yourself struggling for an English word or phrase, write it in your native language...or in any language. Make up words if you must, but keep writing. Don't stop for any reasons".
