Format: Paperback
This is the kind of wonderfully useful book you will return to read again and again. It will become an old friend; it's pages becoming marred by yellow highlighter, finger prints and coffee stains, it's borders obscured by margin notes and sticky tabs that take you back to the relevant pages you referenced during a particular Work In Process; a faithful companion and history of a writers path to publication.

It is a useful tool, but it is NOT a dry-read as so many reference and how-to books are. It is also entertaining and amusing. The authors often irreverent and tongue-firmly-in-cheek comments and examples help bring the pages alive.

Gwen

P.S. Please Note: My comments are based upon my reading of the PDF version of this book, but I now have my very own hardcopy to caress, use, abuse and deface as it becomes My Companion in writing.

My advice to anyone who is serious about writing?

The Writer's Companion is one of the best reference books I've read on style and writing. Every aspect is covered from grammar, to syntax, to editing, and this is just to start. Literally, it is filled with all the rules and regulations of the written word.

If you want, for example, to learn how to correctly and effectively pull off a first person POV, where every other sentence has the potential of beginning with the "hateful little vowel 'I'", then Writer's Companion will provide you with an alternative, as in the following: "I heard a noise outside my window" could be rewritten, "A scratching sound drew my glance to the window."

Or if you want to learn about New Sudden Fiction, then you can start with a six-word short story that was allegedly written by Earnest Hemingway: "For sale: baby shoes, never worn." In this piece, the Companion is quick to show us, "though some elements are only implied, it has character, setting, conflict, plot, theme, beginning, middle and end." The Writer's Companion is filled with examples and gems such as these.

I found the formatting easy to follow and very well-organized; actually, much better to use than the Chicago Manual of Style. The advice is clear and concise and sometimes even anecdotal. The Writer's Companion is essential for writers and anyone who wants to write. It should be a standard.

Format: Paperback
Hundreds of pages filled with information on writing, including plotting, characterization, editing, techniques, rules, grammar, word usage, and querying. Even areas about writing that I already knew became even clearer.

One of my favorite sections is the part on Telling vs. Showing. I could spot it in the writing of others, but picking it out of my own writing and eradicating it was another story. Now I know the trigger words that indicates I've slipped into telling and have a bunch of tricks to pick them out.

After reading this book, I jumped into editing my novels with vigor--armed with fresh knowledge--and attacked my weak verbs, adverbs, awkward phrasings, and redundancies.

This is a must read for any writer, whether beginner or advanced, and it will be one I refer back to again and again as I continue to write.

In my opinion, The Writer's Companion is wrongly named. It really should be called The Writer's Best Friend. Since I acquired it, it has become my treasured possession, offering me comfort and solace in my lonely occupation of writing. It is filled with wit, wisdom and accessible advice - everything you would value in a true best friend.
But it isn't only a best friend for writers! As a former English teacher I can see the enormous merits of the Companion for the teaching of so many aspects of the English curriculum at different levels. It's as up to the minute as reference books come and therefore completely indispensable, not just for anyone wishing to write, but for those who teach the craft of writing to others.
The warm and lively writing style make it an entertaining read for any lover of language and will prevent it from being relegated to the neglected top or bottom shelves - you know, those dry tomes we buy, believing we should have something like that around, but seldom look at. This definitely deserves a place on the `most-useful' shelf as you will want this friend at your fingertips whenever you write.
As an entertaining read or a useful reference guide, The Writer's Best Friend - oops, I mean The Writer's Companion is a must-have for anyone with an interest in writing. From planning your structure to that final polish and submission to publishers; mastering dialogue to perfecting those pesky POV problems, and every conceivable question of grammar - no aspect of the craft of writing goes unexplored in this comprehensive and easy to read guide. It would make an invaluable gift to anyone with an interest in writing or teaching English or composition and it has my unreserved recommendation.
