More About the Author

Victor C. Pellegrino, Professor Emeritus, taught writing and literature at Maui Community College for twenty-eight years, and served eight years as chairperson of the Language Arts Division. He has also taught upper division classes in advanced writing and American literature for the University of Hawaii on Maui.

Recognized as a statewide leader in the field of writing, Pellegrino was the first recipient of the Excellence in English Teaching Award presented by the Hawaii affiliate of the National Council of Teachers of English. He also received the Excellence in Teaching English Award from the Hawaii Branch of the English-Speaking Union of the United States. Pellegrino has served on the editorial board of Makalii, The Journal of the University of Hawaii Community Colleges, and has edited for publication many manuscripts.

During his teaching career, Pellegrino developed a unique interdisciplinary Eastern world literature course emphasizing the writings of India, China, and Japan. This course complemented Pellegrino's Western world literature course emphasizing Europe, Africa, and Russia.

Pellegrino's books have guided writers for more than two decades. In 1984, he wrote two books designed for use in Hawaii schools, You Can Write! Practical Writing Skills for Hawaii and You Can Write Workbook. A Writer's Guide to Transitional Words and Expressions was first published in 1987 and is now in its seventh printing. A Writer's Guide to Using Eight Methods of Transition, published in 1993, is now in its second printing, and serves as a complementary text to his popular transitional words book. In 2003, A Writer's Guide to Powerful Paragraphs, his third title in the writer's guide series, was published. This title focuses on thirty different ways to organize and write effective paragraphs. A Writer's Guide to Perfect Punctuation is the fourth title in the writer's guide series.

Pellegrino's writing is not limited to the world of English. He has written two reflective books, Maui Art Thoughts: Expressions and Visions, and A Slip of Bamboo: A Collection of Haiku from Maui. In 2001, he published an Italian cookbook, Simply Bruschetta: Garlic Toast the Italian Way, which contains 65 recipes for garlic toast toppings. He is currently working on a novel, a vegetable-based Italian cookbook, and his family genealogy.

In addition to his own writing, Pellegrino has edited and assisted in the publication of numerous books for other authors from Hawaii and the Mainland. He has conducted self-publishing seminars for the Maui Community College Department of Continuing Education and the 2001 Hawaii Writer's Conference. As a cookbook author, Pellegrino has appeared on television shows in Hawaii and on the Mainland. He has held numerous food demonstrations, taught many cooking classes, and conducted cookbook writing workshops.

Most recently, Pellegrino has become a taro farmer on land newly acquired in Waikapu. Besides restoring the farm to its original state (1850) with his family, neighbors, and friends, he is writing children's allegory focusing on the restoration.

Pellegrino received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from the State University of New York, College at Buffalo. He has studied and traveled extensively in Japan, and China, and in 1984 he was a Fulbright Scholar in India. He is married to Wallette Garcia of Wailuku, Maui. They have three children, Shelley, Angela, and Hokuao, and two grandchildren, Jonathan and Ryan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why didn't we learn this in highschool? vital necessity!, September 25, 2006
This review is from: A Writer's Guide to Eight Methods of Transition (Paperback)
No wonder writing was so tedious and difficult in highschool and college. Teachers expected us to magically develop style while incorporating learned grammar via osmosis. Guess what? Style needs to be taught. This book is the answer, one of several by Pellegrino which is a must for writers of all ages, not just professors and professional authors, but for secondary students and also elementary teachers. It's never too soon to teach how to move from one paragraph to the next, how to begin a story: from the ending, the middle or the beginning, for a multitude of reasons and effects. This is a quick read and handy reference, neatly organized with short but well explained chapters with concrete, helpful examples.

5.0 out of 5 stars A salve for my pain, May 6, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: A Writer's Guide to Eight Methods of Transition (Paperback)
I stumbled upon this little book - and Mr. Pellegrino's other books - here at Amazon.com and have been very glad I did. I write a lot (about 1800 pages last year) in the technical industry and this book was a launching pad to help me improve my transitions. In addition to this information, it is important to note that this book is best used with A Writer's Guide to Transitional Words and Expressions.

The two books complement each other very well; however, they are best implemented as two books - in my opinion. This book (using 8 methods of transition) is a read and shelf book. The book can be read and re-read, but it will not be heavily used as a reference. The other book (a writer's guide to transitional words and expressions) is already getting worn and I've had it for only a few months.

In the end, the two books work well together and are sure to spice up your writing. To be sure, these books are, without a doubt, the best solution to transitions in writing that I've encountered and, to amplify, allow me to state that I feel overwhemingly confident that you will enjoy these books. OK - so transitions can be over-employed...

5.0 out of 5 stars If you write, this is a great addition to your working library, November 20, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: A Writer's Guide to Eight Methods of Transition (Paperback)
I've been writing for more than fifty years - and the proper use of words still sends me to the books now and again. And again and again . . .

Victor Pellegrino had a marvelous idea: short books - almost booklets - helping out with some easily and often forgotten rules of writing. He has authored four of them so far. One is a guide to paragraphs, one on punctuation, another on transitional words and expressions and then this gem on using the eight methods of transition.

These books are useful to anyone who works with words, whether they be high school students or experienced writers needing an instant refresher.

Pellegrino concisely describes how to gracefully transition from one point to another using devices to indicate time order, sequence, comparison, contrasting, illustrating cause and effect and so on. The explanations are simple and concise and accompanied by example. Pellegrino is a fun author and all four of these books would make a great gift to a budding young writer.

He concludes with seven additional ways to connect ideas. He places special emphasis on pronoun reference, something that I often trip over.

These books are inexpensive, short and, above all, fun to peruse and helpful. Every writer should add these four slim volumes to their library.

Jerry
