Book Description

January 15, 2010
When she was a college student, aspiring writer Carren Strock's English professor told her, "Some people are writers, and some people aren't. You are not a writer." She didn't pick up a pen for another fifteen years... until Robert Redford came to town. Appearing in Redford's movie led to writing for national magazines, and then to selling her nonfiction book at auction to a major New York publisher. Now Carren Strock lays out her improbable journey from "not a writer" to professional writer. She shares what she's learned along the way, and tells you how you can do it, too. And you don't even need your own movie star experience....

5.0 out of 5 stars "Make writing a priority.", April 7, 2010
This review is from: A Writer's Journey: What to Know Before, During, and After Writing a Book (Paperback)
Carren Strock's "A Writer's Journey" is a personal and practical guide for fledgling writers, especially those who lack the confidence to follow their dreams. After having been told by her college professor, "You are not a writer," Strock "didn't pick up a pen for more than fifteen years." Fortunately, she was not permanently deterred by her teacher's negativity, and eventually resumed working towards her goal of becoming a published author. This book is divided into three sections: what you need to know before, during, and after writing a book. To help novices avoid pitfalls that could derail their careers, Strock provides clear and concise tips to help aspiring writers stay motivated as they hone their skills. She also gives advice on how to market one's work, find a good agent, and navigate the world of publishing.

What are some of the obstacles that new writers face? If someone has a demanding job, for example, how will she find the time to create, revise, and polish her manuscript? A support system can help--sympathetic relatives and friends (especially those found in writing workshops) may be sources of encouragement. It is crucial for a writer who has family and work obligations to organize her time meticulously. Strock also discusses how to come up with fresh ideas, deal with writer's block, cope with rejection, and most important of all, write with skill, passion, courage, and honesty.

"A Writer's Journey" is effective because Carren Strock's tells it like it is. She never underestimates the barriers that can dissuade timid souls from soldiering on when the going gets tough. In addition, she is a wonderful example of a mature woman who made her own luck and was smart enough to learn from her mistakes. She did her homework, put in the necessary hours to revise her work, networked, and did what was necessary to publicize her product. "A Writer's Journey" is lucid and inspiring; it is also well-organized, informative, and fun to read. The chapters are brief and to-the-point; each one is followed by a recap of key concepts and a few exercises to get the reader's creative juices flowing. The central theme that Strock hammers home repeatedly is that "the craft of writing can be learned if you are willing to work hard, listen to criticism, and rewrite again and again and again and again. Only the tenacious become published writers."
