The book is great, online database not so much...,
By Jennifer (Tennessee) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Writer's Market 2007 Deluxe Edition (Writer's Market Online) (Paperback)
The Writer's Market book is, as always, very useful. It provides great information about each market, including customized tips for querying each publication. Each listing has information about how much each market pays for features, columns, and departments.
A subscription to the online database version of the book is included in the purchase. Access to the online resources is why the book costs more than just the plain old book. However, the online database is not terribly useful if you actually make a living as a writer. Payment information is missing from the listings. Although you can search for markets, the results do not tell you anything about how much each market pays. The market could be 5 cents a word, or $1 a word. Who knows? This is very unhelpful. I've gone back to using the hard-copy Writer's Market since I must know how much a market pays before I'll bother sending a query. I wish I hadn't forked out the extra money this year for access to the online database. If you're new to Writer's Market, do yourself a favor and just buy the regular old Writer's Market, which is well worth the money. Don't waste your money with the online edition.

Writer's Market,
This review is from: Writer's Market 2007 Deluxe Edition (Writer's Market Online) (Paperback)
This book has great potential for readers to find major locations for sending articles to be published. The book is short on locations and publications in a very large industry--tourism. I would not recommend the book for travel writers.

Basic information for fiction and non-fiction writers,
This review is from: Writer's Market 2007 Deluxe Edition (Writer's Market Online) (Paperback)
I found the Writer's Market 2007 Deluxe Edition by Robert Lee Brewer to be informative; however, I had already located another publication that led me to the sources that I sought for promoting MY book.
Nonetheless, the Writer's Market is now a part of my book publishing/marketing reference resources collection. Also, regardless of which book/magazine used as a source of information, it is ultimately up to the individual(s) to do the "leg work," or delegate the efforts to someone/others, in their particular promotion efforts. At any rate, I believe that the book is worth purchasing. Jane L. Wilson author Suicide Is So Not An Option: My Motivational Agenda for Living

I purchased this book in December 2006. The material is accessible, current and relevant. A new writer or even a seasoned professional can utilize this book and its information to get a firm grasp of what is to be expected.
This book should be required reading to anyone who considers writing as their vocation. Well Done!

I bought this book when I was contemplating how to get my book out. I was nearly finished writing it and looked in this book and was amazed at the wealth of information that it contains! The web features were nice too.
You may be a bit overwhelmed at the wealth of information in this book at first. I went to the table of contents and narrowed things down a bit. This is an excellent reference to have around. It was interesting and I strongly suggest it for other writers.

This is a good book to have if you are a professional, ametuer, or aspiring writer. Jam packed with tricks of the trade, model letters, recommendations from professionals, and the largest listing of possible clientele out there, this book tells you what you need to do, how to do it, and what you can expect to make in return.
Writer's Market, this year as every year, is a must have if you have enough interest in writing to look at it.

Not for me, but might be for you,
This review is from: Writer's Market 2007 Deluxe Edition (Writer's Market Online) (Paperback)
I was interested in finding markets for technical articles about the music business (recording studio stuff). To my amazement only one such magazine was listed! There are at least 8 or 10 that I know of (some of which are to be found on news stands and available to the general public), and I was hoping to find more, as well as learning about the submission policies of those with which I was already familiar. Considering all the infinitely more obscure publications that do appear here I was baffled.
This isn't just a question of looking under the wrong category heading, either. The magazines I am familiar with are really not listed at all. How this book (and the website as well) could fail to list Keyboard and Electronic Musician is beyond me. I am sure that if you are writing fiction or any of many different types of non-fiction this book and website could be very useful, but for me it was a complete waste of money. Caveat Emptor |
