If you are going to get published , this is still the best way to go. But I am tired of the recycling of the same old articles and examples of letters to agents and publishers . Since I am buying this book every year , I would like to see some fresh material for a change. I assume Writers Market has staff writers. So write.

Okay, so I'm not going to review this book as there are plenty of reviews covering that...however, I will review the scratch off portion which provides the online activation code...it is JUNK. Watch out! If you order this and it gets hot/other in shipping then the entire thing just peels off leaving you with a blank space. Unlike some activation codes, this isn't printed on the paper itself but rather a film which can result in the entire thing coming off and no ability to read the code. This is the first and only time I've ever encountered this. Needs major improvement!

You can pay a little more and get the online edition, which is recommended if you are doing a lot of e-submissions in volume. If you are an experienced, selling, author, the print or kindle edition is the way to go. Otherwise, e-submissions, regardless of volume, rarely work unless you're known.

If you're relatively new and breaking in, 99% of successful submissions happen through agents. This 2014 edition of "the" one and only guide has a record number of agent listings, including those who are accepting new manuscripts. Knopf (Random) is particularly nice to first timers, especially in STEM, but they still suggest an agent pre screen. Sambuchino's Literary Agent guide also is a good bet in this regard:
2014 Guide to Literary Agents.

You can also self publish through Infinity press, CreateSpace (Amazon's self pub co.) and a number of others, but try the agent route first and DO NOT get discouraged, even at 20 plus rejections!

The book covers magazines and even scripts, but most of the best "big name" mags require an agent submission (eg. Time or Newsweek). On the other hand, there are MANY "niche" magazines who WILL accept your submission directly, listed in this book, and if it's good, publish articles if you have a specialty. The key is not only to use this fine book, but also read carefully not only the submission guidelines, but a few of the recent successful articles in your target pub to get a feel for what their editors and readers like. For example, I just published an article on natural remedies for pet arthritis in a natural vet magazine.

Very narrow niche, very narrow audience, matching very narrow article.

I am appalled by the amount of outdated and incorrect information! I am a published author with a big name publisher and I purchased this for magazine article leads. The website & agented/unagented info was incorrect. The listing dated back to 2011 and hadn't been updated since. The editors listed haven't been with the published in over 4 years. The listing was incomplete and completely incorrect. Moving on to other publishers I've worked with, again the information was incorrect and outdated.

I hadn't purchased this book in a few years. I purchased the "deluxe" edition for the online benefits. The book's listings are comprehensive and I found them useful. However, the accompanying articles are woefully out of date. They looked similar to ones I read in Writer's Market ten or more years ago. Seriously, does anyone really send an SASE anymore? When I left the magazine publishing world twenty years ago, I only saw SASEs from novices who really didn't know what they were doing. Sadly, the truth is that editors assign stories to people they know -- either former staffers they know from current or previous employment, or writers known to other staff members who can vouch for them. Editors want to know that you can deliver what they need, and deliver it on time. Your clips of previous work won't tell them that. And it helps to have access to the magazine's editorial calendar. If you know that the issue ten months from now will focus on X, you can pitch a story on X to the editor and they might be interested...or at least will know that you know something about the magazine.

OK, the 5 stars are actually based on past editions. I'm writing to ask what the difference is between the $21 version and the $35 Deluxe version. I couldn't find an explanation anywhere on the Amazon pages. Is access to the online database the only Deluxe feature? Is it worth 50% more? I know that editors often change jobs and publications go kaput mid-year, so I'm thinking that's the value of the online database--namely, Writer's Market will keep the info current. Can anybody weigh in on this? I don't mind spending the extra $14 if it's worth it.

Order came early. I have been reading and planning out articles for publication and this is a handy tool. Also received a free membership to writers market online with the purchase.
