Insider guides can often be a mixed bag, leaving out useful details or including places that don't fit the guide's theme just to mention an old favorite of the author. Writer's Retreat avoids these pitfalls by presenting a focused, well presented guide with features and insights beyond normal expectations.

The cafes and coffee shops readers are directed to are a nice collection of hidden gems and more commonly known hotspots. The key is that in addition to location, the author includes peak hour information for each place and suggestions as to the best time to avoid crowds. The value of this information can't be understated in a city like New York. The guide is divided into geographic sections, making it easy to find recommendations based on what area you'll be in on a given day.

Beyond that the author gives us some etiquette advice (most of which should be common sense but it's presented quickly and covers points important enough to warrant a reminder) and a fantastic section at the end of "Inspiration Itineraries": suggested museums, parks, etc (again arranged by geographic areas) to wander and explore.

Overall a great list of recommendations from someone who's found a lot to share, and an easy recommendation for both those new to NYC and old hands looking for new ideas.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Guide To The NYC Cafe Social Scene February 3, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
People may not realize this, but thanks to the popularity of Starbucks coffee shops and cafes have replaced bars and pubs as the new place to meet people and be social.

Juliet C. Obodo's book, "Writer's Retreat" is not just a book for writers looking for a quiet cafe to sit and write in. It is also a book that provides an excellent list of all of the cool and hip coffee shops and cafes in the five boroughs of New York City; places where smart, sophisticated and attractive people go to have a nice, sobering cup of brew and also to be seen.

As someone who lives in the West Village of Manhattan, there just aren't enough coffee shops to meet the demand. Coffee shops and cafes are springing up in commercial retail spaces previously abandoned due to the recession. Some cafes are opening up right along side each other, and even with such heavy competition, they all are filled to capacity on a weekend afternoon. Many times one has to leave a coffee shop upon entering because there just isn't any place to sit, and then the frustrating search for an alternate coffee shop to visit begins.

Juliet C. Obodo's handy guide allows the reader to quickly find the locations of the trendiest (and sometimes little known) cafes. Every cafe and coffee shop in this book has a reputation for excellent service and quality. It serves as a reliable guide that one can use promptly when trying to find a great spot to study, read or meet on a first date. Juliet's detailed and accurate descriptions of decor, staff and atmosphere can really help the reader find that special cafe that will set the right impression, for them, or for that someone special.

Even though this book is brand new there are new coffee shops and cafes springing up all over NYC as this review is written. I can't wait for the second edition of "Writer's Retreat" which will feature even more incredible places to have a nice cup of mocha.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Mobile Pocket Guide to NYC January 21, 2012
By Chris G
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this book in digital form for my droid and have been using it as a pocket guide for when I'm roaming the NYC streets. It's full of insider tips like when is the best time to avoid crowds, what kind of crowd the cafe draws, what items to try, the cafe layout, if they have wifi, and more. Also it's nice to finally know what part of Manhattan I'm in (i.e. Chelsea, Flatiron, Gramercy, etc.)

Juliet C. Obodo writes fantasy fiction and inspirational city guides.

She loves sci-fi and fantasy. The books in these genres are able to hold her attention for more than a chapter. She enjoys novels that introduce a sci-fi or fantasy element in to the plot in a realistic or almost mundane way. Recently released favorites are The Magicians and The Discovery of Witches. They inspired her to finally put the stories in her mind on to paper.

She is based in New York City, but travels out-of-state once a month and internationally every two months in search of the perfect cup of coffee.
