This book is good for grades 3 and up but doesn't really touch on what we need to know when teaching younger kids. I teach first and second grade and recommend Teaching with the Common Core Standards for English Language Arts PreK-2.

While this book may contain interesting research information, it is not classroom-ready. I expected resources that I could put to immediate use to prepare students for the writing assessment. Don't buy this book unless you have time to analyze the information presented.

Two things about Writers Workshop for the Common Core have increased my success with teaching my students to write. First, the “Writing Situation” and “Directions for Writing” in the writing prompts showed me how to align my prompts with Common Core. It’s the clearest way to give students a choice in writing about a topic based on a core standard.

Second, the revision strategies were so concrete, understandable and easy to use. I just followed the mini-lesson, used the models and wrote with the kids. Every chapter was so easy for my students to follow that they literally took charge of their own writing. The revision strategies are like nothing I’d ever seen before. The titles of the strategies told the kids exactly what to do. “Jot and Blend” gave student credit for adding at least two “picture makers” to every sentence from a Picture Makers wall chart provided. “Writing Leads” and “Circling Picture Sentences” were just as simple for my students to follow. And I’d never thought of requiring students to read aloud to a PAL with a specific PALS strategy. In two months, my students were talking the language of writing with their PALs each time they wrote.

I will definitely be recommending this book to my colleagues. And will continue using the strategies with my students year after year.
