Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Writing About Art was written as the text for a course of the same name required of all art majors at The City College of New York. The book explains the different approaches college students encounter in undergraduate art history classes. Each chapter outlines the characteristics of one type of visual or historical analysis and briefly explains its history and development. Passages by well-known art historians provide examples of each method. Sample essays by students are accompanied by extensive explanations of suggested revisions. The book also includes a step-by-step guide to researching art historical topics and a section about correctly citing sources.

About the Author

Professor Marjorie Munsterberg teaches and is the Field Editor for Nineteenth-Century Art at caa.reviews. She received her Ph.D. from Columbia University, where she wrote her dissertation on the British landscape painter J.M.W. Turner. Since then, she has published articles and book reviews about 19th-century British and French art, as well as co-authored World Ceramics (Penguin/Studio Vista, 1998). She currently is writing a monograph about the development of art criticism in Britain during the late 18th and the early 19th centuries.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read, May 1, 2009
In this smart, perceptive book, Marjorie Munsterberg demonstrates how to analyze visual works. A great strength of the book is that it takes into account both the advantages of researching a work of art though the reading of books and essays and the advantages of working with the information available on the internet. This is the first book I've read that takes art history into the modern age.
