Like one of the book's authors, I was unsuccessful in my first attempt at the Virginia Bar Exam despite my intense preparation and devotion to the bar review course's timeline and study guide. My bar review course lacked in one significant area: how to write a bar exam essay that gets you the most points from the bar graders. This is not the way you learned to write for law school exams, and the method required for bar exam essays is not taught in bar review courses. This book teaches you that method, with detailed instructions that are certain to improve your bar score.

I read this book before I began studying to take the July 2012 Virginia bar exam. This book laid a solid foundation for essay writing and brought to light what the bar exam graiders are commonly looking for. Reading this book before I began my 10 week bar exam study course was particularly beneficial because I was able to implement the techniques and writing strategy on all of my practice exams. In Virginia, essays are worth 60% while the MBE is only worth 40%, so having the ability to write a solid essay is absolutely necessary. Knowing that I wrote good essays on day one of the bar gave me confidence going into the second day MBE portion of the bar. I passed the bar on my first attempt and I do not doubt the fact that studying this book contributed to my success.

I would encourage everyone to read this before they start studying for the bar exam. It is an easy read which is important to me. I didn't want to tackle a 300-paged book before beginning bar-prep knowing how intense bar-prep would be. I really enjoyed the layout of the book. It really helped me be more concise in my rule statements and persuasive in my analysis. Whether your writing needs a lot of help or a little this book will help you write what the bar examiners are looking for while cutting out the fluff. I highly recommend it and sincerely thank the authors for writing it!

This was another of my many Bar Essay panic purchases and like Gallagers, It is not bad and you feel reading it that it may be helpful. But doesn't really give any substance so its kind of a false hope...then you fail the July Bar because your essays are terrible with no 'analysis' and are 'conclusory'. So still seeking guidance for essays I got this outdated 'nailing the bar' 'how to write essays for law school and bar exams' It was the 2008 edition (which is its most current one available) and all marked up. And its is 110% the greatest 396 pages of essay prep I have ever seen or could comprehend and makes all other essay guidance and guides/books essentially worthless. I would not recommend any of them except for the one nailing the bar book. I guess nailing the bar has lots of stuff, but you only need that one yellow 2008 edition for writing essay answers. It says its for california but trust me, its good for any state!!!! Good luck out there.
