Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 10-12 Prospective college students can gain a wealth of helpful information here for putting a best foot forward in the college admissions game. Directions for writing to admissions officers in proper business form are given, including examples. Short and long essays are explained along with their importance in the application process. Sample essay questions from colleges and universities are included with tips on approaching the task of formulating the essay. There are hints on overcoming writer's block, ways to get organized by writing a self-inventory and an autobiography, and ideas to ``market'' yourself. Step-by-step instructions are given for writing the actual essay, from developing a dynamic topic sentence to finding an impressive conclusion. Examples of essays are included, along with useful criticism. Black-and-white photos of campuses and students are of good quality but simply break up the text. A well-organized, clearly written resource that is more informative than The Admissions Essay (Lyle Stuart/Citadel, 1987) by Helen W. Power and Robert DiAntonio. Diane P. Tuccillo, Mesa Public Library, Ariz.
