Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Those who can, write. Those who can't write, hire a speechwriter. Ehrlich, a professional speechwriter, gives the reader a behind-the-scenes glance at a unique calling--putting words in other people's mouths. In this often entertaining book, the author emphasizes wordsmithing for tightly scheduled business executives who trust speechwriters to make them sound witty, topical, and powerful. Ehrlich explains the structure of a typical 20-minute speech and how to make or break it with the introduction. The reader will learn how to spice up a community service appeal and how to gear a speech to the opposite sex. In an appendix, the author most helpfully critiques a speech and shows the writer the trick to making the content stronger. Purchase for business libraries or for the communications section of large academic libraries.

5.0 out of 5 stars Savvy advice on speechwriting, July 10, 2004
By
"queens-writer" (New York, NY United States) - See all my reviews
I strongly recommend this book. I'm an experienced speechwriter and I found myself rereading several sections. This should be an indispensable guide for speechwriters at all levels, from beginners to pros. The author gives seasoned and candid advice about such tricky areas as writer-client relations, capturing the speaker's voice, the politics of language, and the realities of the speechwriter's lot. You'll come away with a comprehensive understanding of the frustrations and rewards of the profession.

5.0 out of 5 stars One Great Book, June 24, 2004
As a professional speechwriter, this is the one book I turned to most in my younger days. Well written, great examples, logical layout and plain, practical advice for the novice or experienced writer. One of the best books on speechwriting on the market today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great How-To Book, March 3, 2000

This review is from: Writing Effective Speeches (Paperback)
I have written a few speeches but wanted some professional information on how to write them and get validation of what I've been doing. I looked at a number of books in the libary and found this one to be the most useful. It's written in a direct style and has lots of good advice. That's why I ended up buying my own copy.
