5.0 out of 5 stars A nice summer refresher for homeschoolers, June 6, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Writing, Grade 3 (Spectrum) (Paperback)
We found the Spectrum Writing books to be good summer practice for our kids. We just happen to homeschool, but they would be equally valuable to anyone. The books are organized around different styles (e.g. writing to entertain, descriptive writing, writing to explain, etc.). They are illustrated and have key sections highlighted in color. The pages are perforated and easily removed.

There are just enough lessons (typically 40-50) to keep my kids busy throughout the summer. I usually only ask that they do one lesson per day, since I don't want them to hurry through their writing. Also I ask them to write as neatly a possible, with correct punctuation and spelling.

Overall, the Spectrum Writing books are a useful compilation of small writing assignments - an area that many kids (mine included) need practice with. Check out a few sample pages (an option by the product), to get a better idea of the lesson difficulty.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple yet Thorough, September 2, 2008

This review is from: Writing, Grade 3 (Spectrum) (Paperback)
Do not let this small (134 page) workbook fool you. It packs a lot of content. The lay-out is simplistic with clear instructions and definitions on each page. Most 3rd graders can do this on their own.Basically, it is a lesson plan already done for you. There is no need to plan ahead or look up other information. This book guides you through the writing process. The content builds gradually, consistently and thoroughly, and is the foundation for upper level writing. It has 6 chapters that are already divided into lessons. It covers all writing from simple sentences, short paragraphs, friendly letters, compare and contrast, to narrative and descriptive writing and more. The basic lay-out is a lesson with a definition or information, an example of the how to use the new information, followed immediately with a practice area.

This book works with both slow learners and fast learners. It great!

My son finally "gets it" as to how to write decent paragraphs after going halfway through this book. ALSO a great way to practice cursive.
