It also gives me enough information to help him when he makes mistakes.

My son use to hate writing. I tried a few of these different writing workbooks, and they made the problem worse. They seemed to over-complicate it, and were way too technical for young people. Sure, my kids went through the motions, but rarely did they retain the subject matter.

Then I stumbled onto something that worked far better with my youngest. All we had to pay for was a composition notebook at the dollar store. What I did was simply to start having him write in his journal for 10-15 minutes per day about whatever had happened that day or whatever he was thinking about. (After all, this is most likely what Da Vinci did as a child!)

For the first month or two, I didn't require him to correct any of his writing errors. That is what got the ball rolling. As he wrote about the things that mattered to him without the fear of making mistakes, writing became a lot more appealing for him.

Gradually, I began to help him with corrections to make his writing more readable. However, I was, and still am, very careful not to ask him to change too many things at once. That discourages him. The whole point is to foster the love of writing. I want to keep his fire lit. I just have him make 3 or 4 corrections at a time. The rest of the corrections I make for him as he observes.

Now he writes all the time, and his writing is improving by leaps and bounds. He even says that writing is one of his favorite subjects!

Through this experience, I have come to believe that writing (under these circumstances) will emerge naturally, very much like spoken language. We don't need to dissect it and make technical lessons out of it at this age. We just need to support kids in writing about the things that matter to them.

We have used Spectrum practice books for years. I bought this one for my 6th grader to use. The excercises are relevant in terms of types of writing and the writing subject content. My son doesn't like writing too much but he is able to work with this book.

This book is a repeat of the previous grade levels, so it will be on the shelf for reference only; that is, if I don't sell it to someone at the book exchange our homeschool has annually.

In and of itself, the book is fine. If your child needs help or guidance on "how to" write, or ways that writing is used, this is a good book. However, if your child did the Writing 6 book, much of this books will be a complete waste of their time, so prepare to skip it and don't fret about doing so.

My son is not a fan of writing, but this workbook has broken it into segments that he can easily digest and understand. Thank you!

I purchased this book after many exhausting searches looking for a language arts book with a combination of reading, grammer, and writing. My son is in the 7th grade and currently being homeschooled. I needed a book that would help him with his writing skills because he hates writing. No,it is not a language arts book, but I got it for the specific purpose of helping my son tighten up on his writing skills. The book has some creative ideas and various writing techniques that would help any 7th grader.

bought this for my son going into 6th grade. It does have plenty of great writing exercises but I did take off a star since he did just complete 5th grade and it still seemed appropriate for him. Listen to the reviews and go a grade up at least.

For anyone considering extra curricular writing or home schooling for their child this book is a great resource to use. While it cannot replace a class by itself, it does offer some self learning options that most parents will find valuable in an easy to use and concise format. My only complaint is the perforated pages while useful in allowing specific assignments to be torn out, stapled and recorded/saved, are not useful in that every assignment ends with the back page containing the first page of the next assignment, so the idea does not work.
