5.0 out of 5 stars Tight, Useful Information July 6, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Jodie Renner's 40-page ebook, TENSION, SUSPENSE, & INTRIGUE - WRITING A KILLER THRILLER, is one to keep at hand while you're writing your next mystery or thriller. Readers of mystery fiction who are curious about the scaffolding that underlies a good mystery plot would also find this of interest.

Sure, I know most writers have a shelf of How To books guiding them. Lots of them pad the material, wasting considerable space giving long examples of a point. Not so, this one is tight, compact, and every page useful.

The amount of information on each page can be overwhelming and you slap your forehead thinking, "Yeah, if I could only remember all this." Renner makes it easier. The writing is short, punchy, and cohesive.

A series is planned in this format covering all aspects of the craft of fiction. I plan to buy every single one of them.

Talk about setting a scene! I just downloaded Jodie Renner's TENSION, SUSPENSE, & INTRIGUE - Writing a Killer Thriller the other day, and have been taking notes (and making progress!) ever since. With this 40-page "booklet," Ms. Renner has not only created a direct, no-nonsense "road map" for all the essentials that go into writing tight, clean, thrill-filled fiction, but she has also given us a tiny can't-put-it-down offering that, most pointedly, gives glimpse into what every writer of thriller fiction should know, and most likely grapples with, in creating fiction that not only shocks...but SELLS. Whether aspiring, or a writer who is a bit more seasoned, this "little" offering is a must-have tutorial for any writer who seeks to be GREAT rather than just good. This will help get you to where you most want to go with your writing, but don't take my word for it. DOWNLOAD Ms. Renner's TENSION, SUSPENSE, & INTRIGUE - Writing a Killer Thriller...You'll be glad you did! And so will your readers!

To Ms. Renner: "Jodie, your directive not only fuels me to keep forging ahead with my own writing, but it has actually served to infuse me with the hope necessary, to BELIEVE I can actually make this happen for myself! As a first-time-out writer, I have taken countless bits of advice from this little booklet of yours. Saying thank you, seems to pale in comparison to what I truly feel. I can only hope that this little "jolt" of yours, will pay off in my ability to write compelling suspense fiction, that will soon entertain reading audiences worldwide. Until then, I guess offering a simple "thank you" will have to suffice. I'm so glad to have come across your little "writing class" in booklet form! Thanks again!" - Mark Parker, Boston, MA

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic writer's guide June 19, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
A killer of a thriller guide! Jodie Renner lays out, in clear, easy steps and lists, how the best writers craft their works of art--and shows how you can do it, too. A terrific how-to in avoiding the pitfalls and burnishing the gotta-haves of writing a bestselling thriller novel, by an editor who knows her way around action, drama and creating characters so fresh and real you'll swear they were your friends. I'm a thriller writer myself, with books out worldwide and blessed with No. 1 bestseller status on Kindle for one of them, and still learned a lot just from reading her work. Do yourself a favor and check this out.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best I Read! June 3, 2013
By TusiTSR
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I can't speak highly enough for Jodie Renner's books, Writing a Killer Thriller, and Style That Sizzles. I recently finished the first draft of my first novel. On a whim, I entered it in the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award contest, and it made the second round. Thankfully, it did not make the next cut, since it contained a multitude editing issues. I decided to plunge in and read every book on editing I could get my hands on before I attempt a second draft. Jodie Renner's Style That Sizzles and Writing a Killer Thriller were far and away the two best such books I found. They showed me both what was working in my novel, as well as what I must do to make needed changes. I also feel my next novel will be that much easier to write because of what I learned from her. Jodie's own style sizzles, which makes her books a joy to read. These are fantastic guides to both writing the thriller and editing for any genre.

Jodie's third book, CAPTIVATE YOUR READERS, is all about engaging readers, bonding them with your protagonist, and drawing them into your story world through techniques like using deep point of view, showing instead of telling, avoiding author intrusions, writing dialogue that zings, and generally letting the characters tell the story.

Also check out Jodie's handy, time-saving, clickable writers' e-resources, QUICK CLICKS: WORD USAGE - PRECISE WORD CHOICES AT YOUR FINGERTIPS, and QUICK CLICKS: SPELLING - COMMONLY MISSPELLED WORDS AT YOUR FINGERTIPS, both of which you can also read on your computer, tablet, or smartphone.

She worked at a variety of jobs before she became an English and French teacher, received her master's degree in literature, and became a school librarian. Somewhere in there, she raised two sons, traveled to a lot of different countries and cities, and moved thousands of miles - twice.

As a freelance fiction manuscript editor, Jodie specializes in thrillers, romantic suspense, mysteries, and other fast-paced, suspenseful fiction. She is a member of International Thriller Writers (ITW), Sisters in Crime (SinC), and The Federation of BC Writers (http://bcwriters.ca/).
Jodie's favorite authors include Robert Crais, Sandra Brown, Lee Child, Karin Slaughter, Michael Connelly, Nora Roberts, Harlan Coben, Janet Evanovich, Dean Koontz, Lisa Scottoline, John Grisham, Lisa Gardner, and many more.

When she's not editing, writing, or reading novels or books on writing compelling fiction, Jodie loves to pursue her two other passions, photography and traveling. She has traveled extensively throughout North America, Europe and the Middle East, and continues to sneak away whenever she gets the chance.
