These essays are like a relaxed chat with a close friend. Goble has a way of putting the reader at ease. Her prose is not particularly clever or shocking or complex. She uses no sixty-five dollar words. She's not out to prove how smart or what a good writer she is. No author showboating to detract from her homey yet profound musings.
Her goal is the goal of all great essayists: spurring the reader to reflection. Her prose, transparent as glass, does just that. Each essay is a facet of her life shared---candidly, plainly and satisfyingly. |
