5.0 out of 5 stars Great for Teaching
I discovered this book while searching for a resource to aid me in teaching a poetry-writing class for older teens & adult writers. I hesitated in buying this book, as I thought it would be useful only for classroom use (& only for grade school ages), but I bought it anyway just to give it the benefit of the doubt.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not as helpful as I expected it to be.
I felt this book was lacking in many ways. I'm more for wrighting peotry with meters (number of syllables per lines), and more rhyming. to me writing poetry should be a pleasure, and there's no need to get overly technical and having to write something that would be also difficult to orate, as this book seems to instruct the reader.

I discovered this book while searching for a resource to aid me in teaching a poetry-writing class for older teens & adult writers. I hesitated in buying this book, as I thought it would be useful only for classroom use (& only for grade school ages), but I bought it anyway just to give it the benefit of the doubt.
Boy, am I glad I did! This book is very helpful! The principles are not simplistic, but they are basic and clear.... easy to follow. THis book works well for both individuals looking to see what poetic elements are and for educators / facilitators looking for clean, concise ways to deliver complicated material ("What IS a poem, anyway?!?!"). Ms. Tucker answers all the questions one may have about what makes a poem good, successful, readable, and offers "activities" along the way to illustrate the gist of each concept. The activities are wonderful: concrete and well-explained, and, in short, perfect tools for classroom use. The language in the book can be understood by all; younger poets will fully understand, and adults will appreciate the no-nonsense and straighforward rhetoric.
I am really glad I bought this helpful guide! It has impacted how I write and teach poetry.

This is an excellent resource for teaching the elements of elaboration and poetry. Simile, metaphor, imagery, personification, alliteration, onomatopoeia, repitition, rhyme, meter, tone, etc. are presented in simple explanation and practice excercises.
