Book Description

April 2005
Writing is more than a way to record sentences we've already shaped in our heads. As someone famously said, that's just typing. This book will help you develop an approach that includes the thinking part of writing. A series of logical steps will lead you from idea (or assignment) to finished written work. It answers some basic questions that every writer faces: How do I get organized? What do I do first? What next? How do I evaluate my drafts? How about word choice? When have I said enough? How should I end? Designed to help almost any writer, The Writing Process is also an excellent tool for teachers of writing, as well as for parents who want to give their youngsters an extra boost.

About the Author

Lane Goddard and David Hatcher provide tools and training for everyday writers and their teachers. Lane studied literature and writing back in school. But she was also the one everyone made fun of for storing her underwear in compartments, and keeping her socks matched up. Upon graduation, she found that her organizational and analytical skills were more in demand than her fiction. Her day jobs have included designing work-flows, writing job procedures, analyzing training needs, and developing training programs. As co-owner of LandaBooks, she has developed, written, and edited course materials, and designed and produced workbooks and visuals. And yes, she still writes fiction. David is a writer and editor by training (bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English) and, most importantly, by experience. Not only has he worked as a professional writer—his fiction and nonfiction have been published in leading newspapers and magazines—but he has supervised dozens of other professional wordsmiths, trained hundreds more to work with words, and developed training materials and concise guidebooks that have helped thousands of people improve their communication skills.

1.0 out of 5 stars What a rip-off, November 30, 2010

I feel cheated.
This book is only 70 pages.
I blame myself.

I flip to a random page:
"Readability is hard to define. Some writing can be clearly understood in one smooth, easy reading. But other writing is hard, unpleasant work, putting the reader through loop-backs, head-scratching, and displeasure"

<sarcasm> Wonderful. Some writing is easy. Other writing is hard. Just what I needed to learn. I'm so glad I paid $10 for this.</sarcasm>

The moral of the story: research before you buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great one..., August 3, 2009

David Hatcher and Lane Goddard have done it again! They have taken a seemingly ...well, a seemingly less than riveting topic and made it come alive. The information presented in The Writing Process is crisp, easy to understand and helpful to anyone who writes...and isn't that everyone?
