Book Description

1405193352 978-1405193351 May 12, 2009 1
"Margaret Cargill's background as a linguist and research communications educator and Patrick O'Connor's experience as both research scientist and educator synergize to improve both the science and art of scientific writing. If the authors' goal is to give scientists the tools to write and publish compelling, well documented, clear narratives that convey their work honestly and in proper context, they have succeeded admirably."
Veterinary Pathology, July 2009

"[The book is] clearly written, has a logical step-by-step structure, is easy to read and contains a lot of sensible advice about how to get scientific work published in international journals. The book is a most useful addition to the literature covering scientific writing."
Aquaculture International, April 2009

Writing Scientific Research Articles: Strategy and Steps guides authors in how to write, as well as what to write, to improve their chances of having their articles accepted for publication in international, peer reviewed journals. The book is designed for scientists who use English as a first or an additional language; for research students and those who teach them paper writing skills; and for early-career researchers wanting to hone their skills as authors and mentors. It provides clear processes for selecting target journals and writing each section of a manuscript, starting with the results. The stepwise learning process uses practical exercises to develop writing and data presentation skills through analysis of well-written example papers. Strategies are presented for responding to referee comments, as well as ideas for developing discipline-specific English language skills for manuscript writing. The book is designed for use by individuals or in a class setting.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"It is also, however, of very significant value in assisting non-academic writers to get their point across to academic, bureaucratic and political audiences. This is becoming critically important with so many issues." (Ausmarine, June 2010)     "I am tremendously excited to use this volume as a guiding framework for teaching my own students how to write." (The Quarterly Review of Biology, March 2010)

"Useful for self-study or in the classroom, the book is for native and non-native English speakers, for research students and those who teach them paper-writing skills, and for early career researchers wanting to hone their skills as authors and mentors." (Book News, September 2009)

"Even for a more seasoned writer, the very well laid out and accessible style of the book offers a dip-in reminder of aspects of good scientific writing practice." (Chemistry World, August 2009)

5.0 out of 5 stars fantastic way of learning how to publish!, November 5, 2011
By
Julia Romanowska (San Diego, CA, USA) - See all my reviews
I spotted it by chance at a Willey stand at ACS Meeting and I am so happy that I bought it. The book combines a manual and excercises - all written in easy way, with many examples and useful checklists. It can be read from cover to cover or randomly, because the chapters are nicely divided into sections. There is huge amount of useful tips - things that you didn't know or maybe didn't realize that you knew - put in easy to remember phrases. The book covers all the important issues when preparing, writing and publishing a manuscript. Fantastic tool!

3.0 out of 5 stars Scientific writing, September 11, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Writing Scientific Research Articles: Strategy and Steps (Hardcover)
This book is written primarily for speakers of English as a second language. The advice is excellent, but too elementary for native English-speakng graduate students (the audience in my course). Thus, it provides some guidance, but could be improved for many graduate students in the USA by taking a deeper look at technical writing in the sciences.

5.0 out of 5 stars Should be required reading, January 8, 2010
By
postgrad@JCU (Queensland, Australia) - See all my reviews
A very well written, easily read reference for scientific writers, especially early career researchers like myself. It left me wondering why these principles and information weren't better presented during my undergraduate training, especially considering how important scientifc writing is to the scientific process. An invaluable resource, I'd recommend it to any early career researcher who is beginning to write up their research.
