Writing from the Senses: 59 Exercises to Ignite Creativity and Revitalize Your Writing by Laura Deutsch is a delightful and truly resourceful book. Though the book is primarily designed for writers who have lost their way and are grappling within themselves to find their way back, it is a book that aspiring writers as well as established writers will find useful.

Divided into 8 parts – Sight, Sound, Smell, Taste, Touch, A Symphony of Senses, Motion and Reworking Your Material, author Laura Deutsch’s splendid job will enable readers to engage in exercises that will bring to life the writer in you. What is important is to recognize the triggers. Writing from the Senses is a writer’s gym, a workout, which will enable you to develop to your fullest potential.

Writing from the senses is a great read disguised as a writing manual - and vice versa! Using the senses as an overall framework, Deutsch has assembled creative writing samples along with prompts, exercises, and hints to help writers delve deeper into each scene and bring their stories and non-fiction alive. The tone of the book is positive, supportive, and informal, with humor and wisdom that make this an enjoyable read and a useful guide. Recommended for newly hatched, fledgling and experienced writers alike.

Writing from the Senses was so enjoyable I couldn’t put it down. I love Laura’s prompts that stimulate each reader’s writing gifts. It awakened aspects of my writing that I didn’t know I had and helped me come alive in new dimensions. This book is a classic written by a person with a distinguished background and career. I intend to go back over it, savoring every word, using it as a textbook to train myself in writing from the senses and developing my creative writing skills. I believe this book could be used to train future writers across the world.

Some chapters very insightful and well-done, but not all attain the same level, so that the book was uneven. On the whole, I found the writing samples a bit predictable and tending towards workmanlike.
