Writing Out the Storm is funny, smart, and inspirational--like Jessica herself. There's no "authorial distance" here. She's tapping us on the shoulder and saying, "Try This."

4.0 out of 5 stars read it!, December 12, 2002
This review is from: Writing Out the Storm (Paperback)
Excellent, no-nonsense advice. All writers should read this book. Morrell's teachings can save you from losing heart, and your manuscript from losing ground. Not only does the author help writers begin their stories, she shows them the route to finishing it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't know what to write? Now you do, November 25, 2010

This review is from: Writing Out the Storm (Paperback)
In recent years, I have become more and more interested it writing prompts and ways to get started writing in the first place.

Now I don't know if that's because I am tired of being an adult with way too many choices about things and just want someone to tell me what to write or what.

Or maybe it's just my unmotivated nature of just not feeling like thinking too much on my own and need a push in a given direction.

Or maybe it's more of just liking the different ways folks have of inspiring us to actually sit and write instead of just sit and stare at the blank page or screen wishing we could write something instead of only think about the fact it's raining and we really need to get the grass cut for the final time this year.

Whatever the case, I love Jessica's book "Writing Out The Storm." It's not just prompts but guidance, inspiration, motivation and useful ideas.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Life Raft to Write out the Storm, November 20, 2005

This review is from: Writing Out the Storm (Paperback)
I was expecting a lot from this book and was pleasantly surprised to see it meet those expectations.

This book covers many topics that face writers during their writing process/life. It takes you by the hand and walks you through each one as if you have a coach right there with you. It also has 'try this' exercises at the end of each chapter giving you suggestions of how to work through that perticular road block - a very nice bonus to the book.

There were a couple of very minor typos on the first Introduction page, but aside from that it is a very well written and quite useful book and well worth the price of admission.

5.0 out of 5 stars An elegant solution to writer's block, August 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Writing Out the Storm (Paperback)
This book is simple, straightforward, and useful. It reflects care and skill of the author, who has synthesized many years of writing and teaching writing into a book that's slim in size but huge in ideas. Not one word is wasted here--every quote, writing sample, and idea has purpose. A lovely effort and better than 95% of writing how-to books on the market.
