Book Description

July 1998 0534363652 978-0534363659 1st
This accessible and invaluable workbook-style reference guide will help your students smooth the transition from writing for composition classes to writing for psychology classes. Author Lenore T. Szuchman quickly and succinctly provides the basics of APA style in Writing with Style. Szuchman's years of experience teaching writing-intensive courses give her an inside track on the trouble spots students often encounter when writing papers and dealing with APA style. The unique workbook format offers both a quick reference to APA style and interactive exercises that give students a chance to practice what they've learned. They'll be encouraged to use already published articles as models, so they're introduced to journal sources in a nonthreatening way. And Szuchman pinpoints the kinds of errors that are often made, followed by suggested solutions.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This excellent and accessible text covers the most critical elements of writing standards in the psychological sciences. Examples and exercises contained in the text make it highly useful for undergraduates who need to become familiar with writing conventions in psychology."

"Dr. Szuchman is to be applauded for providing a well-developed set of materials that include both basic information-reinforcing problems and creative exercises that will be greeted with enthusiasm by my students." --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

About the Author

Dr. Lenore Szuchman is a developmental psychologist who earned her Ph.D. at Florida International University. As an undergraduate, Dr. Szuchman majored in comparative literature at Brandeis University, and then went on to receive an M.A. in special education from the University of Texas at Austin. Today, at Barry University, Lenore enjoys both teaching writing-intensive courses, specifically Experimental Psychology and Advanced Experimental Psychology, as well as supervising master theses and senior projects as well. In her classes students conduct experiments and write APA-style manuscripts. They also develop independent research proposals. In helping her students to make the transition from other types of college writing to the type required of scientific psychologists, Dr. Szuchman began to bring stacks of APA journals to class each week. As a result of her search for ways to train students to notice the differences between what they had been accustomed to reading and writing, and what was now expected of them, she learned of the most effective way to teach them. Another result is her students' valuable feedback that has shaped the final series of exercises in this book. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

2.0 out of 5 stars Has this author heard of examples?, May 7, 2000

This review is from: Writing with Style : APA Style Made Easy (International Version) (Paperback)
This book is for someone who has never written a paper and has the time to complete the book as a workbook. Unfortunately, this did not apply to me. I have written many papers but have always used MLA style. I know how to write a paper and only wanted help with the format. What I really needed to see was examples of how to cite a journal, a book, a newspaper article, ect. and this author only gives a description.

This book is not very thorough in providing information for APA. I had to purchase a different book that included step by step information about citations. I need examples and this book did not do the trick.
