Book Description

November 1987
Aimed at the new writer, this book shows how perseverance, command of certain learnable techniques and determined practice can enable them to write successful thrillers. It covers choosing the initial theme of the story, the creation of the characters, detailed plotting, research, cutting, rewriting, writer's block and how to find and keep a publisher. This edition has been revised throughout and includes a new chapter on using history in thriller writing. Aimed at the more advanced writer, it demonstrates how to borrow and adapt from history and what conclusions to avoid. Andre Jute has written 19 novels, with nearly 100 editions in English and translations.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

The author of over 40 thrillers sets out many insights on his craft. First published in Great Britain, his book is directed to avid thriller readers intent on trying the game themselves. The genre has become sophisticated in the last few years, he notes, and the field is a tough one. For good, cost-free criticism of completed manuscripts, he advises showing them to other thriller-lovers. There is much to consider and apply, but the loose and discursive presentation leaves many questions unanswered. "Next to practice at your typewriter, the books in the public library are your staunchest allies in the quest for skills," he states. For purchase only where interest in the topic is keen. William A. Donovan, Chicago P.L.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great handbook for wannabe writers, September 13, 2010

Not being a writer, I found this book to be very enlightening and covers all aspects of writing a thriller. It is not a formula instruction book, but does list and discusses all of the bases that need to be covered and things that a writer should avoid. Hard work and stick-to-itiveness is required.

3.0 out of 5 stars No much here, October 2, 2000

Micheal (atlanta, ga United States) - See all my reviews
Well, I did find this book informative, but only to a short extent. Most of the particulars written about in this book, I already knew either from another book published before this one or was what I thought to be common knowledge. Don't get me wrong the book taught a few things but, this is nothing to write home to ma about.
