Book Description

Cancer patients today are writing for their health. They are among the hundreds of thousands -- from poets and monks to homemakers and politicians -- who practice journal writing to find equilibrium in times of stress, clarity in moments of decision, and optimum physical well-being. Cancer patients know that successful treatment depends upon a strengthened immune system. Researchers like James W. Pennebaker, Ph.D., author of Opening Up, The Healing Power of Expressing Emotions (1997), have confirmed that people who write about their upsetting experiences show improvement in immune system functioning.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Writing about our feelings and putting our emotions on paper can help improve our health, as recent scientific evidence suggests. Chia Martin has used this approach, along with conventional therapies, in her experience with cancer. Her story is a vivid reminder of the importance of psychological and spiritual issues in health-care. -- Larry Dossey, M.D. author, Reinventing Medicine and Healing Words

5.0 out of 5 stars Right In The Middle Of My Heart, June 22, 2001
This review is from: Writing Your Way Through Cancer (Paperback)
Chia Martins book is an outstanding piece of literature, filled with such a poetic depth and beauty of words, that it leaves you stunned. This book is about writing - if you wish to write yourself -, about honesty, integrity, humor and sadness to an extent, that it brings you to tears. There is no escape from the radical changes cancer causes in a humans soul and body, and how this challenge is turning you upside down, while at the same time she gets in touch with the deep essence of life and death, and transcends it. She opens a bridge between cancer patients, and their families and friends, an understanding that would be hard to reach without her inspringing journaling, and poems. For those who want to learn all about writing, it is a wonderful path to their deepest sources. For those, who suffer cancer themselves (or for their belovend ones) it's a must, and a gate to a love which is beyond words.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Book May Change Your Life, May 11, 2000
This review is from: Writing Your Way Through Cancer (Paperback)
Even if you have never kept a journal or considered yourself a writer, this book may be for you. Even if you or a friend or loved one has not been diagnosed with cancer, this book will leave a lasting impression. But if you are coping with cancer or any serious illness, this book may well be just the medicine you need. Written in a no-holds-barred style, Chia Martin deals with her own emotional and physical challenges with grace and acceptance that is inspirational. You will laugh, you may cry, but you will not easily dismiss the truths she tells. Highly recommended for anyone needing a positive outlet for any type of life-changing, stressful experience. One of the best books about writing I have encountered.
