5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent September 22, 2006
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I discovered her when a self help site featured her writings.

Florence, in her writing is a very conscious, and enlightened woman who uses metaphor to great effect. This is four books in one volume, and its value way exceeds the price.

Many of her examples are derived from the Bible, and adapted to our personal situations. One such case is blowing down the walls of Jericho. The walls of Jericho represent our fears which need to be dissolved. I feel like she opened up my mind with some of these metaphors, and I nderstood them in a new way.

She is a metaphysical writer, and her wisdom, and sage advice permeates. One piece of advice is not to talk to everyone about your business, and plans. This, I found helpful because I had made the mistake of talking about it to the wrong person. The world is full of wet blanket people who will instil doubt in your goals. Doubt divides the path.

Her writing style is fascinating and never dull, and reminds me a little of Napoleon Hill. I hope you found this review helpful.

One of the many stories in this book is the inner meaning of Snow White, and Ali Baba.

The only caveat in this book is, if you are resistant to the Bible, you may not like this book so much, as it does have a strong spiritual element.

There are also many affirmations used throughout this book. My favorite one is: That which I seek is also seeking me.

I whole heartedly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable for Life March 17, 2004
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This tremendous book was given to me by a great friend over thirty years ago. I'm not religious and felt uncomfortable at first with all the references to God so I substituted "The Power" instead, which works for me. However, the life lessons she so eloquently and yet simply tells are truly invaluable. When things start to go wrong either in my life or in my thinking I trot out The Game of Life and read it again to put myself on track. Although I used to give this book to friends I found that most of them didn't read it so now I tell them about the book and let them buy it for themselves if they're really interested. I've never seen reviews for a book that ALL give it five stars, but it deserves it. Mrs. Shinn still influences many with her wonderful insights.

5.0 out of 5 stars 30 years July 17, 2003
Format:Paperback
I first read the Game of life and how to play it over 30 yrs ago. The price of the book was $... Florence has never let me down. The pages of my book are worn down and brittle. But so many changes in a person life are reflected there. My book is like my family Bible and will be with me till the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deserves 6 Stars May 1, 2003
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Thanks Florence. You and Sarah Ban Breathnach changed my life. I will/can never go back.

This is a great book, but if you are not "biblical" it could be a tad (I said tad!) of a turn-off. If that is the case, then read Shakti Gawain's Creative Visualization OR Louise Hay. They are all really the same books just written at different times. However, Florence wrote first, so she gets 6 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still reading her work decades later December 23, 2003
Format:Paperback
The Writings of Florence Scovel Shinn surpass most books I have read in the four decades I have been reading. Her books are so wonderful, that I STILL re-read them, because their flowing truth, and absolute clarity never let me down.
I began reading her work so long ago, and was captivated by her writings from the first line on.
To this day, her books are among my all time favorites. They will uplift you, help you grow, and help you create the life you truly want to live. HIGHLY recommended as the classics they are, and will continue to be. 1,000 stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars Magnificent March 5, 2006
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Florence Shinn is not as well known as she should be. She was an American artist, Metaphysics teacher and author, who lived from 1871-1940.

The four books contained in this collection are her best and are full of profound wisdom that bears reading and re-reading. They also have a remarkable and rare property: dipping into them at random in times of need, very often turns up just the truth or solution that you require.

She had a wonderful way with words, generating many memorable quotations:
"If one asks for success and prepares for failure, he will get the situation he has prepared for."

"Intuition is a spiritual faculty and does not explain, but simply points the way."

"Giving opens the way to receiving."

"We cannot always control our thoughts, but we can control our words, and repetition impresses the subconscious, and we are then master of the situation."

"The game of life is a game of boomerangs. Our thoughts, deeds and words return to us sooner or later with astounding accuracy."

Her writing style is a little archaic, but paradoxially it makes her words sink in even more, and the perceptive truths in these books are both timeless and modern.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in personal or spiritual growth, and to anyone interested in finding, fulfilling and exceeding their potential.

5.0 out of 5 stars design the best for your life though spiritual energy October 25, 1996
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Florence Scovel Shinn has many true, personal and inspiring
stories to tell to each one of us that spans all generations.
Her positive and practical approach to life teaches us how
to CREATE what we want to get out of our lives and how to
bring that into fruition through an open mind and prayer.
Ms. Shinn was creating this positive self-help approach to
life generations before the phrase 'self-help' was even
coined. I continue to reap benefit from her book as I
periodically reread it for direction and inspiration. Anyone
who enjoys reading Emmet Fox or Dr. Norman Vincent Peale(both
of whom reviewed her book) will enjoy her spiritually
practical and humorously laced writings. A book everyone
can benefit from!
