Double Pleasures,
By Grady Harp (Los Angeles, CA United States) - See all my reviews (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE) (TOP 50 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Written In The Stars (Audio CD)
What a pleasure it is to find an album committed solely to the music of Harold Arlen, a composer of such a gift for melody and the wisdom to seek out such lyricists as Ira Gershwin, Johnny Mercer, Ted Koehler and EY Harburg to guarantee a legacy of unforgettable songs. Double that pleasure by assigning the execution of these fabulous songs to vocalist Barbara Fasano!
Fasano has a rich, darkly hued voice that can torch with the best of them while maintaining that ability to fit into the jazz groove, adding her vocal gift to the overall sound of her colleagues - fully in collaboration, fading into the fabric that is inherent in Arlen's tunes. Fasano is intimate in 'Here's what I'm Here For', florid in 'Let's Fall in Love', and finding just the right pairing in her 'duets' with trumpet or guitar or piano. A very special band is `Don't Like Goodbyes' with a lyric that is by both Truman Capote and Harold Arlen. She just knows how to make beautiful sounds while always finding the essential mood of the tune and lyric. This is one extra-special collection - no, recital! Grady Harp, March 07 |
