Book Description

June 13, 2006

New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth Lowell returns with a chilling tale of the law gone wrong and a kidnapping that threatens more than one life. Orphaned at thirteen, Grace Silva clawed her way out of poverty and violence to become one of the most respected judges on the federal bench. Grace believes in the rule of law -- lives it, breathes it. She has always been buttoned up and buttoned down. Except once.

Joe Faroe has learned that laws are made by politicians, and politicians are all too human. He believes in the innocents, the ones getting ground up by governments that are too corrupt to protect their own citizens. He's been through the political meat grinder himself. It cost him his career, his freedom, and the woman who still haunts him. Since then Faroe has worked outside the rules as a kidnap specialist for St. Kilda Consulting, a Manhattan-based global business that concentrates on the shadow world. He is good at his work -- intelligent, confident, ruthless. Until a friend dies trying to kill him.

Now Faroe is out of the business. Then Grace comes to him and Faroe finds himself sucked back into the shadows, tracking a violent killer who holds the life of Grace's son in his bloody hands.

From AudioFile

In Lowell's head-spinning story a teenaged boy is being held hostage by a Mexican drug lord to force his presumed father to return millions of dollars he stole in an investment scheme. The moral here is not to steal from Mexican drug lords. Fortunately for the kid, his mother is smart enough to enlist the aid of his REAL father to try to pull off a rescue that would make James Bond (and Batman) jealous. Whisky-voiced Maria Tucci proves you don't have to be a man to pull off an espionage thriller. She is a strong performer who ramps up the tension making a strong novel even stronger. 1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible sound work makes this book impossible to listen to, April 7, 2010

This review is from: The Wrong Hostage CD (Audio CD)
I really tried listening to this book because it seemed interesting. Unfortunately I couldn't even get through the first disc. I am not an audio engineer, so I can't tell if this is the fault of the person doing the reading or of the people who were supposed to do the post-production sound work. Sometimes the voice of the reader gets down to almost a whisper so quiet that I can't even hear the words without turning up the volume. Then she will say something really loud almost deafening me. I got tired of constantly turning volume up and down and ringing in my ears. Better buy an actual book and don't bother with this audio version.
