Book Description

Signature Select February 14, 2006
A chilling blast from the past . . .

Six years ago prosecutor Will Patton's girlfriend stormed out on him. That night she was brutally raped and murdered. The violent act knocked Will's world out from under him, alienating him from his family, who Will believed were responsible. Wrapped up in his own guilt and anger, Will developed a powerful thirst for justice . . . and was determined that no criminal would ever walk free again.

Now he's returned to his hometown, but he is greeted by a gruesome discovery -- another body and an all too familiar calling card. And once again the victim is romantically linked with Will. In order to track down his serial killer, Will teams up with rookie detective Trina Giallombardo -- only to realize that if he falls for her, she'll be next . . .

More About the Author

Janice Kay Johnson is the author of sixty-plus books for children and adults. Her first four published romance novels were coauthored with her mother Norma Tadlock Johnson, also a writer who has since published mysteries and children's books on her own. These were "sweet" romance novels, the author hastens to add; she isn't sure they'd have felt comfortable coauthoring passionate love scenes!

Janice graduated from Whitman College with a B.A. in history and then received a master's degree in library science from the University of Washington. She was a branch librarian for a public library system until she began selling her own writing.

She has written six novels for young adults and one picture book for the read-aloud crowd. ROSAMUND was the outgrowth of all those hours spent reading to her own daughters, and of her passion for growing old roses. Two more of her favorite books were historical novels WINTER OF THE RAVEN and THE ISLAND SNATCHERS which she wrote for Tor/Forge. The research was pure indulgence for someone who set out intending to be a historian!

Janice is divorced and has raised her two daughters in a small, rural town north of Seattle, Washington. She's an active volunteer and board member for Purrfect Pals, a no-kill cat shelter, and foster kittens often enliven a household that already includes a few more cats than she wants to admit to!

Janice loves writing books about both love and family -- about the way generations connect and the power our earliest experiences have on us throughout life.

In addition to her real name, she has also written under several pseudonyms through the years, including Janice Stevens, Janice Bartlett, Kay Bartlett and Kay Kirby.

Her Superromance novels are frequent finalists for Romance Writers of America RITA awards, and she won the 2008 RITA for Best Contemporary Series Romance for SNOWBOUND.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read, July 7, 2006
This review is from: Dead Wrong (Signature Select) (Mass Market Paperback)
Dead Wrong probably wouldn't win any accolades - but then, a romance book has to be seriously good to get recognition - but it's a pretty good book. One of the better ones I've read recently. It's not amazing, but I enjoyed it. There's a nice combo of romance and suspense, good characters, and a nice background that the story builds upon. I think Johnson has written 4 or 5 books previously based on the Patton family. I haven't read them, but unlike some books, I wasn't left feeling left out. She covers the history fairly well, enough that you understand the past, but not dwelling on it.

Serial killer plots are fairly typical, but they never seem to get boring. Dead Wrong has a nice plot. It's doesn't have lots of twists and turns - which is good and bad - but Johnson keeps you into the story by keeping you guessing on who the bad guy might be. You're pretty sure it's one guy, but there's enough of a possibility that it's someone else that you're not sure.

The building of the relationship could have been a little better. There's definite chemistry between Trina and Will, but there wasn't much time for them to build an emotional connection where you felt them falling in love fit. It seemed rather quick. But not so much that it was unreasonable.

All in all, a good read. I don't have many major complaints...only that Johnson had this odd tendency to occasionally write sentences that were just really awkwardly worded. It was odd and distracting at times.

5.0 out of 5 stars fine police procedural romance, February 16, 2006
This review is from: Dead Wrong (Signature Select) (Mass Market Paperback)
Following the brutal rape and homicide of his girlfriend Gillian and the conviction of her killer Ricky Mendoza, Will Patton returns home hoping to heal. However, another murder with the same MO of being strangled by a jockstrap and the cup pulled over the face as the Gillian case occurs. The police assume it is copy cat even as more homicides happen. The deceased Amy Owen and Gilliam share something in common with Gilliam. It is a connection to a beleaguered Will; he dated both.

Police Detectives Meg Patton and her partner Trina Giallombardo lead the investigation, but both know they should be excused as they have ties to Will. Meg is his mother while Trina is half in love with him having never overcome her high school crush. As they follow clues, the two female cops try to keep Will safe even as he rejects their protection; instead he begins his own inquiries.

The sequel to PATTON'S DAUGHTERS: PATTON'S DAUGHTER: RENEE\PATTON'S DAUGHTER: MEG is a fine police procedural romance with the emphasis on the investigation including its impact on the relationships between the three prime players. The inquiries cause a strain between mother and son and slow down the budding romance between the partner and the son. Though why Meg remained on the case with her obvious conflict of interest seems off kilter, fans will appreciate this strong suspense thriller.
