Could have, would have, shouldn't have.,
By Saint Thomas (Kent, Ohio) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Wrong Turn 3: Left for Dead (DVD)
The title of my review refers to the fact that by all means, WRONG TURN 3 : LEFT FOR DEAD should have turned out better than it did. It could have, it would have and it should have. But in the end, it didn't. Honestly folks, I'm surprised this movie even exists. When I heard about a third film in the series, I was pretty excited! It was like a pleasant surprise for us Horror fans, who never really know when a series is going to continue or end. Sadly, this movie is a little disappointing.
The WRONG TURN series has always been considered by Horror fans to be nothing more than a "poor man's" version of THE HILLS HAVE EYES or THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE. Which by all means wasn't a bad thing considering us Horror enthusiasts usually take what we can get in terms of crazy, mutant, hillbilly, cannibalistic, redneck mountain men. When it comes down to that, we want to keep it simple. Blood, guts and mayhem in other words. Nothing Shakespearean by any means, just good 'ol fashion hillbilly Horror! The first one in the series had a lot going for it. Stan Winston (ALIENS, JURASSIC PARK) did the special effects for the film, giving the mutants a disgusting sense of menace. It wasn't the goriest of the series (when the movie came out, film studios were still a little reluctant to release a movie that was unrated) but then again, it didn't need to be. The first WRONG TURN was actually pretty scary during some moments. Also, the acting was actually not bad either. I was pleasantly surprised after watching the first one when it came out. The second film in the series wasn't anywhere as good as the first, but it was still fun. WRONG TURN 2 : DEAD END added more gore, more killer mutant rednecks and a lot more nudity! It was a sequel that would have made Jason Voorhees proud! Not to mention that it had Henry Rollins in it to boot. It was a passable follow up to the first movie. Which brings us to the third entry, WRONG TURN 3 : LEFT FOR DEAD. I hate to say it (especially in a stupid comical way) but this movie should have been left for dead itself! I mean the way this movie turned out, I don't see how anyone involved with it could have felt satisfied with the finished result. The biggest problem with this movie is the directors lack of imagination. The movie starts out of nowhere and we don't even get a chance to know any of the characters before they're sliced to pieces. Once again, we don't need too much in terms of character development but a little more time spent with them (at the beginning) couldn't have hurt. Does anybody even remember what happened in the second film? Didn't it involve a crew working on a reality TV show getting slaughtered in these same woods!?! Don't you think the big budget TV executives would have wondered where their cast and crew was after some time? Not to mention the local police and everybody's family members! The forest couldn't possibly be that large and eventually somebody would find those crazy mutant freaks. I dunno', maybe I'm digging too deep here. Another problem I had with this movie is the lack of style. The camera work is very straight forward and basic. With no zest to it. Would it have killed them to at least throw a gritty camera lens into the mix!?! Something to make the movie look dark and sinister maybe? Most Horror movies today (in the 2000's) at least get that part right. In my opinion, such successful Horror films as HOSTEL and HIGH TENSION are well done and executed right. They filmed those movies with a camera lens that seems like a throw back to late 1970's Horror films, which I like a lot. WRONG TURN 3 doesn't even try to add interesting lens colors or camera angles to the movie. It's just there and in your face like a Porno. There are a lot of problems with this movie and I don't want to beat a dead horse here. Let's talk about the plot now. Once again, it's pretty simple. Two prison guards are transferring a bus load of inmates through the woods and eventually their bus gets thrown from the road via rednecks in a dirty old pick up truck. As the prisoners make their way through the woods (of course a lot of macho "drama" ensues), they get picked off in gruesome ways one by one. End of story. The movie does have some nice scenes of gore, although it would have been nice to see them shy away from some of the more obvious uses of CGI during a few of the deaths. If thats what you're looking for (a gory movie) then that shouldn't turn you away. It does give the audience tons of the red stuff. Also, the spooky music during some of the more strange moments was a nice and unexpected touch to an otherwise disappointing film. On the plus side, the make-up effects are really nice and some of the actors are actually pretty good. With a little more style, this could have been just as good as the second film in the series. Instead, because of it's faults, it stays at a number three. Gore Hounds, check it out for nasty scenes of death! Bodies get chopped up, faces get sliced off and limbs are hacked off! Also, four people die within the first ten minutes of the movie! Not to mention the action is actually pretty good too, which is shocking considering everything else is pulled off so cheap. You can't say the special effects crew didn't try with this movie, thats for sure! With a little more time and thought, this could have been a fun third entry. Instead, people are just going to bash it, hate it and forget it. I really doubt if the series has any future after this movie. Oh' well. It could have, it would have and it should have. But it didn't. I've said my bit. Over and out!

Go watch WT2 again instead.,

I'm a fan of Wrong Turn 2. Its a movie I've watched half a dozen times now. WT2 and Hatchet both take me back to my days as a teeneager watching what were (at that time) great slasher movies. So I was excited to see WT3 being released on DVD. To everyone involved in this movie - shame, shame on you.
When a horror movie is great, I don't mind plot holes. When it sucks, like this film, I simply can't abide them. Can someone explain to me how a mutant is driving around in a tow truck and no one knows he exists? Gas, oil changes, new tires and spark plugs - is there some sort of mutant gas station on the mountain that accepts animal skins in return for a full tank of gas? And how is it that an armored car went missing with tons of cash and no one went looking for it? And how the heck did it end up miles from the road? And if mutants use money to buy gas, why didn't they take all the cash? Horrible acting, characters you don't care about, a complete lack of creativity in the death scenes, plot holes worse than the Saw franchise. Skip this one and watch WT2 again.

I was anxious for this movie to come out, because I liked Wrong Turn part 1 and part 2 alot. But this movie was a disappointment for me. It looks very low budget and just seemed boring to me. I bought it instead of renting it, because I own the other two. But I would recommend renting this before buying it, unless you are like me and just buy it to have all three.

AWFUL! PARTS 1 & 2 WERE GOOD BUT THIS ONE BLOWS!,

This plays like a bland Syfy channel movie! It has that 'TV show' look and its NOT scary for one second! The 'gore' is incredibly fake with some of the WORST CG you'll ever see in a movie! I'm tolerant of low-budget FX and love some of the lowest budget movies ever made but this is just 'off the charts' BAD without the unintentional humor that would make such lameness worthwhile. It's sad to see a series that had potential get the axe like this (I loved the first 2 movies in the series). The actors are all so damn generic and their lines are delivered so blandly that you can never forget you are just watching a movie. There are no decent charismatic characters like in the first 2 movies. Every scene is lit by massive spotlights even though most of it takes place deep in the woods at night. The redneck mutants look really stupid with big oversized heads that are like bad halloween masks you could buy in a store! This thing is awful on so many levels it would take a book to list them all. Thanks hollywood for ruining yet another promising series!

Worst "turn" yet!,
This review is from: Wrong Turn 3: Left for Dead (DVD)
After the first two movies which were 5 or 6/10 this one was a real let down. The acting is poor and the story is poor. It would have helped to have more deformed bad guys rather than just one throughout the whole film. As there are families of baddies in the woods I though the film would have progressed from the second film and developed more of a story into the third film but this doesn't happen. The gore is what you expect with a couple of tasty deaths but the acting really is bad and let's the film down badly. You can see why this was a straight to DVD movie..hopefully they don't try and make a 4th one unless a good budget is used. You can see when the actors are in the bus that the road ahead is cheaply added into the film to save money...Don't bother with this film 2/5.

Wrong Turn 3,

This review is from: Wrong Turn 3: Left for Dead (Unrated) (Amazon Instant Video)
I absolutely thrilled over the first two installments; being a child durning the golden years of horror back in the late seventies and early eighties; bringing back the nostalgia of the horror movie and returning to the roots that made them great! The third installment, however, was less than one star. Terrible script, even worse dialogue, and the acting was below the prior installments. How does a successful movie franchise go backwards? I mean seriously, they didn't even need Rob Zombie at the helm to ruin this one!!

Very Disappointing, Nowhere Near as Good as Second Entry,
This review is from: Wrong Turn 3: Left for Dead (DVD)
I really love the second film in this series. It's actually good and surprising. This one is very disappointing. You don't really care about the characters (they're not very smart or well developed), and there's really only one mutant running around killing people so it gets pretty boring. There's also plenty of bad CGI, and the makeup on the psycho is pretty weak. The whole film is forgettable. If you watched the other two, you'll probably see this no matter what, but for everybody else, save your money.

And I thought the trailer for this movie was bad enough!,
This review is from: Wrong Turn 3: Left for Dead (DVD)
All in all it was a little under decent but the non-stop f-bomb and bad CGI death really dragged this movie down... plus the Soundtrack sounded like it was from "The X-Files!"Plot: a group of criminals are being transferred to there new prison but when a maniac driving a truck knocks there bus off the road and into the dark thick dense woods of west Virginia they soon realize along with a single survivor of a raft incident that there are two cannibalistic hillbillies (Father "Three Finger" and Son "Three Toes") trying to kill any living thing in these woods and there next target is the prisoners, the survivor, and the three guards that have all fallen into this grisly predicament! Review: What a mess... gore and movie wise! This has probably the goriest deaths out of any wrong turn movie but most of them looked completely fake and some are quite farfetched! I did however like some of the creativity throughout the movie but it was quickly destroyed by the consequences the scenes caused! The CGI that was used in other places also looked again very unreal! I felt that the deaths were created by a kid who was bored and just plane lazy! The plot is original at best but I did notice that there were too many characters in this installment over the previous two which made the film sort of confusing in trying to figure out which criminal did what! It was just messy! Acting: It had decent acting that needed more put into it.... the first three victims were all terrible actors and I wish they created a better script for these actors to follow! Gore: Lots of bloody impalements, decapitations, a face sliced in half with a scythe, a gross severed cranium scene (with a gross brain part that follows), a body sliced vertically into three parts, some gruesome bow and arrow action, graphic barb wire deaths, severed limbs, stabbings, slashings, and a lot more! It was gorier than part two but definitely not as realistic! Bottom Line: "Left for Dead" took the series straight down and I hope Declan O' Brien has a way to bring it back up with the fourth installment! The film brought $5 million from its DTV (Direct to Video) prophet! But that doesn't mean it's a good movie! Suggested MPAA: Rated: R for strong bloody violence and gore, pervasive language, nudity, and brief drug use Is it worth the Buy on a scale of 1-10: 6 For the Movie itself on a scale of 1-5: 2

Bad cgi and not as fun as the others. Let's hope that the director of this treats the upcoming 4th entry right.

BLOODY MESS,

As a lifelong horror junkie, I've seen too many horror flicks to count. While the first two WRONG TURNs were passable, this third entry is just sloppy film-making, relying on gore rather than real thrills or suspense.
The characters are all unlikeable, except Alex, our heroine so we are left with wondering when and how they bite the bullet. Perhaps i've been desensitized by horror overkill, or maybe I'm just tired of sadistic, redundant horror. This is just another pointless sequel that will likely spawn WT4 but I hope my horror addiction doesn't result in my watching it. |
