days of whinnies and wine....,

I kept waiting for a 38 year old guidance Counselor to figure out her own life. Callie appeared more adolescent than her kids... picking Vicki in the end as a leftover treat. And so cliche! She sleeps with a woman one night and starts wondering where they will set up house.
I hate that everyone over 15 appears to be a drunk.. more beer, vodka and wine mentioned on every page than Callie working through her stuff. Hoped that the end could at least have Callie cutting down on her drinking after her doctor's visit. Here's what I got out of it: Lesbians, Liquor, Lust and Losers. Also, the book was poorly edited which appears to be the norm for Bella Books... only good thing is that the binding held together - actually, bad... I wanted an excuse to toss this book out. Jackie Calhoun used to write better novels.

To Be Or Not To Be,
By Angie (Wisconsin) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Wrong Turns (Paperback)
In Jackie Calhoun's Wrong Turns, Callie Callahan had me guessing all the way. At first she doesn't think she's gay. But when Marc, her gay business partner, reminds her that she's been divorced and hasn't dated for eight years, she rethinks her aloneness. Then she's really confused when she meets Vickie and Meg, women who show an interest in her, and women she must choose between or lose both. I recommend Wrong Turns to anyone who has ever looked to the right when she should have been looking to the left.

I've read other books by Jackie Calhourn, but Wrong Turns was by far my least favorite. This book just keep coming up short of my epxectations. I found it hard to keep my attention and left me feeling cheated by what I thought would be a good book.

Great Read!,

Again, Jackie Calhoun has written another great "real life" lesbian book.
Callie Callahan's confusion about her attraction to two women is believable and artfully written. Calhoun has a wonderful way of getting the reader to feel the inner struggles that many women go through as they try to sort through their feelings and attraction for another woman. I highly recommend Jackie Calhoun's "Wrong Turns" for a great page turning summer read!!

The main character is annoying,
By Sage320 (Newport News, VA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Wrong Turns (Paperback)
Callie Callahan is a divorced mother with two children and the part owner of a store that is failing. She is vacationing at a lake that her family often visited in her childhood to try and think things through and decide where her life is heading. Her life nearly ends when Vicki Browning nearly runs over her with her boat. Can anything go right in her life? After years of being single, Callie finds herself being drawn to Vicki in a way she never imagined. In an effort to bring in some extra money, Callie rents the second floor of her farmhouse to Meg Klein, a quiet woman who excites Callie's passions in a very real way. Now Callie is involved with two women and she doesn't want to be a lesbian. She doesn't know which way to turn, but both of them seem wrong in some way.
This is a difficult book to read because Callie is a really irritating character. Her kids are out of control and getting into trouble, which she can't see even though she's a counselor. Sometimes it's hard to tell who is more spoiled, her or the kids. She falls in love with a woman who is just trying to be nice to her and then turns to Vicki who is unbelievably pushy. Callie is totally unaware of other people's feelings or needs and all she seems to care about is the cabin on the lake. Jackie Calhoun is a more experienced writer than this book indicates. The story jumps from one topic to another and changes direction before a scene is finished. The characters aren't fully developed and the clichés are plentiful. For example, after sleeping with a woman one night, Callie is ready for the U-Haul the next day. If the reader can get past Callie's annoying behavior, it's a fair story, but it could have been better.

This was another finest from Jackie Calhoun. From the minute I started it, I didn't put it down. Jackie has a wonderful way to pull you in the story and feel like you are actually there.
Wrong turns is about a woman who is trying to find herself. Just when you think you have it figured out, the oppisite happens. I even shed a tear when Callie told her parents that she was a lesbian. If everyone's parents took it as well as hers, it would be a wonderful society! Great job Jackie! I look forward to many more great reads!!

This book was a huge disappointment. The characters are under developed, the main character is a pathetic complainer and what was suppose to be a love story was more a story about settling for something safe!

Another great book by Jackie Calhoun!,

Jackie has once again published another excellent read. When I started the book, I was unable to put it down. Jackie Calhoun made the reader believe that they were in the story with the characters.
I have to admit that when Callie told her parents that she was a lesbian, it brought a tear to my eye. If all parents were that acceptable of their childrens sexual orientation, society would be wonderful. Jackie Calhoun left you guessing throughout the whole book about who Callie was going to end up falling in love with. Keep up the great work Jackie! I look forward to the next great book! |
