Throwback to 90's Wu - But Could Have Been Longer,
By
This review is from: Wu Massacre (Audio CD)
I've been a diehard Wu fan since they dropped Enter the 36 Chambers in '93, and Wu Massacre is a welcome throwback to their mid-90's sound. Wu heads can argue all day over which Shaolin MC spit the best, but there's no denying that an album with Rae, Ghost and Meth is going to be heat. The album reminds me of Ghost's first solo album, and the beats mostly stick to a 60's and 70's theme.
Almost half of the tracks were produced by Mathemetics, who averages one or two tracks on most Wu-related projects. RZA's only contribution to the production is the 70's themed "Dreams", with the remaining beats produced by Scram Jones, Emile, BT, Ty Fyffe and Digem Tracks Productions. The cover art also makes the album a nice collectible, with the illustrations done by Marvel Comics artist Chris Bachalo (X-Men illustrator). My biggest complaint about the album is that it's too short, and half of the songs never make it to three minutes. Even though tracks like Mef vs Chef 2 don't have a hook, it would be nice if the track was longer than two minutes. Meth unusually admitted that Def Jam rushed this album, so unfortunately you're getting only 10 actual songs (more or less making this an EP). The two skits are funny, but come off as filler. Pimpin' Chipp is the sickest track on the album, the 70's throwback beat is bananas, and Ghost tells the tale of Pretty Chipp reminiscent of vintage Nas storytelling. Lyrically, all three MCs come correct on Wu Massacre. This is a hot album and a must-have for any Wu fan, though I think it had much more potential had they not rushed it.

There's not much here, but it's enough to make an impact.
I'll admit it: I was holding my breath for this one; I was hoping for a display of witty, unpredictable talent and natural game...but really (and I'm being fair and impartial here) "The Wu-Massacre" is a modest release. And when I say "modest," I mean that the album is good, even stunning...but there's not enough on it! It's too thin! Again, it's too modest! Anything "Wu-Tang" should not be labeled as "modest." (In fact, the words "Wu-Tang" and "modest" should never be in the same sentence. Be that as it may, this joint is Amazing with a capital A. "Criminology 2.5" is a nice update. "Criminology," from Raekwon's legendary Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, was instantly a classic track and "Criminology 2.5" is pretty much the same. And because Wu-Tang is forever, the beat doesn't sound dated or tired. Method Man's verse is bangin' son! "Mef vs. Chef, Part 2" is another "update" track. "Meth vs. Chef" is one of the better tracks from Meth's Tical and the so-called sequel is also fire. The beat is crazy! "Ya Moms [Skit]" is funny...but not as funny as the opening snaps battle on the '93 debut Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) (play track 9 if you don`t know what I'm talkin' about). "Smooth Sailing" is excellent. (I love the hook.) I never get tired of Ghostface. Meth's verse is sweet too. A lot of people hate "Our Dreams." But honestly, I'm not sure where I stand. I like the lyrics, but I was never a Michael Jackson fan. I'm undecided, I suppose. It doesn't really fit the "Wu-Massacre" theme. "Gunshowers" is pure gangsta. Meth shines again! "Dangerous" is Raekwon's chance to shine and likewise for Ghostface on "Pimpin' Chipp." What a ride! Tracey Morgan must have stumbled into the studio in order to record "How to Pay Rent [skit]." What a nut. "Miranda" is perhaps the best track on the album. All three Clansmen tear it up. I was happy to hear Trife da God on "Youngstown Heist." Trife: keep spittin' that gangsta s--- with Ghost; you two are always on point when you collaborate! "It's That Wu S---" is another excellent track. Thin? Modest? Short? Yes, yes, and yes...but keep in mind: these rap veterans, Raekwon the chef, Ghostface Killah, and Method Man, are three of the most-talented MCs in the game and whatever they touch turns vto gold, even if they don't touch very much. Wu-Tang forever. Peace.

This is a good CD. It is not great, it is not awful it is just ok. It definitely feels more like a mixtape with recycled lyrics and beats. A few of these songs are not even new material! If you like the Wu sound then yes go out and get it but if you like the Wu so much that you have heard some of the stuff on mixtapes in the past 2-3 months do not hold your breath because you have probably already heard much of what is on this CD. Oh and by the way, the whole thing is like 30 mintes, however there is not much fluff so it is not entirely bad. I rather listen to 30 minutes of music than a 50 minute cd that has like 15 minutes of talking and intros and outros and you name what else they can come up with to fill up the time.
The mixing was sloppy due to the fact that these three did not record together. Their music was spliced and it shows. Once again, something I would not mind on a mixtape but not on a record.

Now a lot of people complaining that it's too short, but that's the beauty of it. It isn't overdone, and it has that old school feel without sounding outdated. Artwork is beautiful, lyrics on point, and beats are bangin'. If you a fan of the Wu then you might wanna pick this up. Greatest 30 min you'll spend listening to a cd.

I didnt expect to receive a brand new CD with the exception of the shrink wrap. The CD worked great and it cost me less than downloading it.

Everything is top notch in this Album. All of Wu Massacres guests step up and perform lyrical bliss. Inspectah Deck just stays raw and true. Tight hearing Street Life in the mix as well. I dont think the Album is necessarily a throwback, more like a continuing indepth saga of wu tang itself. The beats are off the hook, I LOVE the Gun Fire in the Music, and a whole lot more. Alot of care when into making this, I just only wish it was a bit longer. I'll be bangin this in my new system soon. have fun everybody.

True Wu! Classic throwback Hip Hop,

For those of us that came into adulthood during the early 90s know and remember how the Wu-Tang Clan had Hip Hop locked down. This album is a throwback to those days. Dope beats, dope rhymes, dope album! This one ranks up there with some of Wu's classic albums Only Built 4 Cuban Linx (Raekwon), Liquid Swords (GZA), Supreme Clientele (Ghostface Killah). The only bad thing I have to say about this joint is it's too short. Only about 8 - 10 joints on the album but don't let discourage you from buying it. Don't sleep on this one...get it!

As for 2010, it's worth 5 stars I think! Just it seems that there's too little of Raekwon in the album.
