Another Wu-Tang "best of"... yay...,
By Nedm (Chicago, IL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Wu-The Story of The Wu-Tang (Audio CD)
To start off, I love the Wu-Tang Clan. I've been listening to the clan since highschool: I've bought more than my fair share of Wu as well as Wu-solo releases (recently I was thoroughly impressed with Gza's Pro-Tools). Upon hearing another Wu-Tang best of was in the works, I was fairly excited. The last best of, while being a solid collection of Wu standards sounded like it was missing something else. I, like most Wu fans, own all of the studio releases and therefore have a good majority of the songs on the Wu-Tang best of. With Story of the Wu-Tang I was thoroughly excited: I expected your typical best of but I was also hoping for a second disc of b-sides, unreleased material, or even live tracks. Heck, even a dvd would have been fine. Story of the Wu-Tang lacks just that: a good portion of the songs on this disc were also on the last best of. I see no real need for picking this album up and am rather disappointed. I'll stick to listening to Wu-Chronicles and 36 Chambers while awaiting the next Wu collection.

I was looking for a best-of compiliation with some of the Clan's best tracks for the car ride. This definitely did the trick. It has many of their most immortal classics from both the solo and group albums, "Protect Ya Neck", "Triumph", "Da Mystery of Chessboxin'", "It's Yourz", and "Winter Warz". I feel it was a bit 36 Chambers-centric though, and there were changes I would have made.
"Uzi (Pinky Ring)" is a great track for getting into the Wu-Tang Clan, and is definitely a gem among their later releases, but is sadly omitted. I would have definitely swapped "Uzi (Pinky Ring)" with "Gravel Pit. It also would have been nice to see some of Ghostface's later tracks thrown it to mix things up like "Apollo Kids" or "The Forest". And "Brooklyn Zoo" would have been a better choice than "Shimmy Shimmy Ya". Also I would've loved to see more from Cuban Linx. I was happy to see "Incarcerated Scarfaces", but I was shocked to see "Wu-Gambinos", "Ice Cream", and "Criminology" all omitted. And I would have swapped "Method Man" for "Meth vs. Chef" or "Bring the Pain". I also wish they could've thrown in "Black Jesus" or "Faster Blade". Even though I would've picked a slightly different song selection, the bottom line is that this CD is packed with CLASSICS. Gold stuff, even if it isn't perfect, this is a great CD to acquaint yourself with the Clan.

On this album are some classic tracks, that take you through the years. It's pretty much singles from each one of their group releases. If you want b-sides or rarities, invest in Mathematics presents, Wu Tang Clan Unreleased album. And yes, there is a dvd version, documenting The Story of the Wu Tang Clan. Sold separately, unfortunately. Wu Tang Forever. R.I.P. Ol' [...]
