5.0 out of 5 stars Children and the Environment.
There are a ton of children's books written about taking care of the environment and quite frankly, most are dull and lipid, failing to capture the imagination of the reader and/or audience. THE WUMP WORLD is not such a book. Instead, it's one of the few pro-environment children's books that is actually enjoyable to read. The message the book teaches is more than just...

1.0 out of 5 stars The Wump World
I love everything Bill Pete ever wrote - except this book. And I'm an environmentalist! There is nothing joyful or entertaining within the pages of this entire book and kids' books need that so kids will want to read them again and again and grow to love to read. You can teach kids to take care of their world without inventing a creature and giving it a horrible existence...

The message the book teaches is more than just about pollution (even though the story's villians are called Pollutians) and has to do with loving nature, taking care of the precious planet we live, and the hope of good overcoming evil. The illustrations are amusing and capture both the mood of the story and the personalities of the creatures represented. For example, the Pollutians ships and machines look like real life contraptions, but with a monster-like appearance. The kids I used to teach in preschool loved this story and it was one I enjoyed reading, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars I can't believe I found this!, December 8, 2000

As I have watched the world become paved over, I have been reminded of a book I loved as a child and the message it offered. It's been at least twenty years since I last saw this book, but I've never forgotten that message. I would like to thank amazon.com for allowing me to pass the message on. I'm going to buy five copies (for now) to give out at Christmas.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Third-Grade Wonder, January 7, 2000

My third-grade teacher read this story to my class when I was eight years old and it immediately became the class favorite book. I was so enchanted with the story, I went home and wrote an play based on it. The production of "The Wump World" by Mrs. H's Class was an elementary school smash, and I love the book to this day. It is a gentle reminder that we cannot take our world for granted. I love this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars A teenager reviews The Wump World, May 7, 2001

I am 16 and I read the book Wump World by Bill Peet for the first time yesterday at my friend's house. As someone who is much older than the audience this book is meant for, let me just say I still found the book to be moving and amazing. It is a great read for all ages and i highly reccomend it. I think the book has a message that kids should grow up knowing. I definitely think you should pick up this book. (and stop the pollutants)

5.0 out of 5 stars A very simple message relayed in a great way!, July 9, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Wump World (Hardcover)
This is my favorite Bill Peet book (although The Whingdingdilly is close) and one of my favorite children's books. My father (who is also a children't book writer) read it to me over 15 years ago, and it has played a role in my love of the environment and environmental issues in general, although I did not realize it at the time! Bill Peet's illustration's are wonderful and the apparent simplicity of the story is also a key feature so that every child can understand the message of the book. The last page of the story really leaves the reader with a sense of optimism, which is very important for children to have. A must read!

5.0 out of 5 stars I Love the Wumps, March 3, 2006

This review is from: The Wump World (Paperback)
I loved this book when I was a little girl - introduced to it in first grade - and I love it as an adult. It made me teary then, and it makes me teary now. But hope is the central theme - the wumps, in the end, survive, return to the surface, and take up their lives, repairing the damage done by the invaders.

The wumps themselves are modelled after a South American rodent called the capybara, which I had never heard of until I was visiting a zoo as an adult and said, "Oh my gosh, a WUMP!" (My husband thought I was crazy.) I hadn't thought about the wumps for years, but it all came rushing back, and the book was JUST as good now as it was when I was a child.

The Peet family cared for a capybara for a while, and you can read about THAT in "Capyboppy," a "chapter book" for young readers. But the wumps are cuter.

5.0 out of 5 stars You have to love Bill Peet, November 7, 2004

This was my favorite book as a child. I had a very difficult time learning to read and the Whump World held my attention (great text and great pictures). I still own my childhood copy- which is very well worn. I love to share this book with children who visit and look forward to sharing it with my son. It is always a huge hit with everyone and it has a great message to boot. The Whump World still puts a simle on my face.

I have strong memories of this book from when I was a child. It had a profound imapct on me and I truly think it has attributed to my environmental/earth awareness. It is a powerful book for children as it conveys the importance of preserving the earth and taking other creatures in to consideration. I searched for this book for a long time until I found it recently at a garage sale. Maybe it just came back into print? Highly recommended for all ages!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pixar Needs To Make This Book Into A Movie, January 28, 2008

Tommy Boy (San Lorenzo, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Wump World (Paperback)
Bill Peet was an incredible, purposeful children's author and illustrator. My kids love his books and get the message loud and clear!! His stories have been etched in my memory for 35 years, and I am such a proud parent to have my kids understand Peet's fundamental message of caring for our planet. It was relevant 35 years ago and highly prophetic of today's world. Where is today's Bill Peet? Al Gore? Don't think so. Why not make a movie of Shady Glade or Wump World? Much more effective to get the environmental message across.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must -read for all !, March 25, 2006
This review is from: The Wump World (Hardcover)
This was a favorite of mine as a child and I was so glad to find it again. A must-read for all ages. Very insightful when written in 1970 and very true for today in teaching the lessons of pollution and the environment and how we must respect and save nature. Wonderful!
