Utility is the key,

I purchased this knife by itself (not in a set) and find it to live up to it's "utility" claims. For those of you who buy knives individually instead of in large sets, this is a nice addition. I was looking for something smaller to compliment my Santoku Chef's knife, but thought the smaller paring knife wouldn't be very useful for much else. This size works well for small chopping tasks and is easy to use for paring as well. It really doesn't make much sense to get a set that includes several of these smaller knives. This one alone has exceeded all expectations.

Perfectly Balanced and Versatile,

The Wusthof 4 1/2 Inch Utility Knife is perfect for almost any small to medium size job in the kitchen. It is exceptionally well balanced and almost infinitely adaptable. The knife is amazingly sharp when it comes out of the box, and holds a great edge even after a lot of use. I find this knife to be my personal cutting implement of choice when I need something smaller than a boning knife. Wusthof knives have been in my kitchen for years and they are the best knives I have ever used. I used to be a chef in a gourmet beef restaurant and I would have loved to have had a set of Wusthofs then. Now I have my own set, but of all the knives in my kitchen I think this one probably gets the most use. Buy a Wusthof once, and never replace it: they are expensive but worth every penny.

My Favorite Knife,

There are really two main competitors in the high-end mainstream kitchen knife market: Henckels and Wusthof. Those who have used both usually have a preference. My preference (and therefore bias you should know about) is for the Wusthofs. The Wusthof Classic line is the more conservative counterpart to the Grand Prix line. The only difference, however, is the handle style. I personally prefer the Grand Prix, but this is an issue of personal preference. The balance and grip of these knives are as close to perfect as I have found. For those wondering what benefits a higher priced knife provides, one benefit is that the blade (or tang) is one piece all the way through the handle. This makes the blade much stronger, and less likely to snap. The Wusthof 4 ½ inch utility knife is a great all-around knife. This is the knife I use for the majority of my small chopping work (when I don't use a Chef's knife).

I've had a set of walnut handled Chicago Cutlery for 25 years, but after thanksgiving my two paring knives disappeard. So - after reading all the reviews I cought this knife and a 3 1/2". WOW - razor sharp and nicely balanced. It's a keeper. I only wish I could afford to buy all new Wusthof knives.

Same Wusthof quality; this knife rarely returns to the [knife] block!,

I did not think I would either need or like this knife; blade is too long for paring; will I really use it; it's light, etc. But fortunately I was wrong. This is the second sharpest knife in the block next to the santoku. I can also grip it with my thumb and forefinger for further control during cutting or chopping. If you need it, get it and you'll thank yourself. Unused, it's a waste.

I was searching for quality knives at a reasonable price that would last the rest of my lifetime. I looked at many sets within my price range. I was going to buy the Victorinox knives with the Fibrox handles. I am so glad I didn't. I went to a local store to see the Victorinox knives in person. The Fibrox handles feel like cheap plastic in my hand. When I got my Wusthof knife I knew before touching it that it is far better. Side by side, the Wusthof just looks more expensive. The handle is not too flat. It a bit thicker so I can get a good grip. That control is important especially when using the 3 1/2 inch knife to peel potatoes.
I cannot give a review on the blade yet because I'm moving and have to store this set till we are at our new home. I am impressed enough with these knives to order several other sizes. I'm actually proud and excited to own these knives. They are better than expected. Don't hesitate to purchase them. They are worth the price.

I love my Wustof knives. This was the perfect size when the 3.5 in paring knife is just a little too small and the 10 in cooks knife is more than you need. The three together should handle all your needs. I have a Wustof knife that belonged to my parents (probably about 40 years old now) and it's still in terrific condition) proving that Wustof knives will last a lifetime!

The knife fits the hand, is sharp, and functions well with all cutting tasks. This is the first Wusthof knife I've owned. I've had Cutco knives for numerous years (work very well) and decided I could use some additional knives in sizes I didn't already own. I had ordered a discounted Wusthof set for a wedding gift and wanted to make sure the knives would be a gift that is appreciated and loved! My reaction to the knife is positive.

I THOUGHT I had THE best knife set until I tried a wedding gift of Wusthof knives that my daughter received. They are SHARP and best of all, they retain the razor sharp edge much longer than other blades I have used.
