2.0 out of 5 stars it broke after one year
I really enjoyed using this knife. Until the blade broke in half while I was slicing some (boneless) roasted meat. I did not use any excessive pressure. All in all, the knife lasted a bit longer than a year. I think a knife at this price range should be more durable than that.

In Europe, this knife is called the "sausage" or "brunch" knife. Since Americans don't usually cut baguettes or weisswurst as part of making lunch, however, Amazon has chosen to call this what it is - the serrated utility knife.

Name notwithstanding, the edge on this knife is the same as the one on the Wusthof tomato and bread knives, and the knife does in fact do splendidly on tomatoes (which aren't too terribly different from sausage) and crusty bread (as long as it is skinny french bread - get an 8-inch knife for the hefty american stuff).

Where this knife truly excels, however, is cutting citrus. The blade is long enough to handle grapefruit, and the scalloped edge will cut even kumquats and key limes without crushing the pulp.

So, I would have called this the citrus knife (or, maybe, the "soft things with a hard skin" knife). While mine doesn't get used as often as the paring or chef's knife, it's among our kitchen's top-five.

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderfully versatile, very useful, November 13, 2002
This review is from: Wusthof Classic 5-Inch Serrated Utility Knife (Kitchen)
I'd like to disagree with the "may be overkill" review. I think this knife is a fantastic addition to any kitchen, especially for a college student who can't afford a wide range of equipment. The great thing about this knife is its versatility: it's perfectly sized and can take on any number of jobs, from tomatoes to meats to bread. I only have three knives (this one, the 5" non-serrated utility, and the 8" chef's knife), and even with all the cooking I do (e.g. thanksgiving for 10), I've never needed anything more than those three essentials. Sure, you may not use the serrated utility knife as often as a chef's knife or paring knife, but you will get a great deal of use out of it. A serrated knife is indespensable, and this one is certainly well worth the investment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bagels anyone?, January 27, 2004

Although a little pricey for a utility knife, this knife is a perfect addition to a starter set (I have the set #8832, includes chefs, bread, sandwich, parer, stick and shears). It cuts tomatoes and bagels like butter. It is one that you will reach for for those jobs that require delicate cutting (such as sausage without tearing the skin) without having to go for the more substantial knives.

Strongly recommend as addition to a set which doesn't have this knife.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for everything!, October 13, 2003
This review is from: Wusthof Classic 5-Inch Serrated Utility Knife (Kitchen)
This is one of the best knives we own. Great for slicing fruit, veggies, and meat in small or medium projects. Very sharp and the pointed end gets used often to pierce fruit for slicing. Still love my Henkel chef's knives 6" and 8" for chopping, but this is a good companion.

This is one of my kitchen workhorses. Gets almost as much use as my chef's knife and paring knife. I use this for tomatoes, sandwiches, rolls, bagels, slicing oranges, etc. Performs perfectly. It's very sharp and well made. You really only need 3 to 5 knives, even for the most well-equiped kitchen, and in my kitchen this is one of my 5.

4.0 out of 5 stars Handiest Knife To Own, February 16, 2006

I own an 8-inch Wusthof Classic Chef's knife and a 6-inch Cook's knife, but I reach for this smaller, lightweight, serrated knife for many tasks. It's easier to wash, and I do wash it by hand and never put it in the dishwasher. It's terrific for cutting citrus fruit. The label does call it a sausage knife, so the reviewer who mentioned that is correct. I haven't tried it yet on sausage, but I'm sure it will work great for sausage, tomatoes, and narrow bread loaves. I even use it to dice onions. I have no regrets about adding this knife to my collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile addition, three knives in one, February 1, 2012

I have been slowing adding to my Wusthof Classic set over the past few months. I knew i wanted another knife to fill my third slot for the smaller knives but wasnt sure if i wanted another utility knife, a tomato knife or a smaller bread knife. This knife is all three in one. It is great for cutting tomatoes or other thin skinned fruits and veggies, i also use it as a mini bread knife when cutting smaller baguettes. I highly recommend this knife as i use mine nearly everytime i cook.

Great 'go-to' knife. I grab it first for nearly everything. Best for soft & semi soft, of course, but it handles everything like butter. Best knife I own.
