1.0 out of 5 stars DO NOT buy these knives!
I love Wusthof knives and have been using them for years, but these knives do not measure up. The handles cracked and came loose after just 6 weeks of occasional use. Wusthof also was quite unprofessional when I approached them for an exchange. Nope, don't buy them, you'll be sorry.

2.0 out of 5 stars An ok knife for $10, January 6, 2010

This review is from: Wusthof Gourmet 3-Inch Paring Knife (Kitchen)
We have owned several of the Wusthof Classic series knives for about 8 years and absolutely love them. Occasionally we have the need for an extra paring knife so I picked up the less expensive Wusthof Gourmet paring knife about a month ago. While the Classic series construction is very solid, heavy and therefore durable, the Gourmet series seems much less so simply because it is so light; only time will tell if the Gourmet series will hold up but the difference in weight seems significant enough to warrant serious doubts.

As others have mentioned, the Gourmet series paring knife has a thinner flexible blade compared to the stiff blade of the Classic series. The lightweight thin blade seems helpful when peeling however it does not lend itself well to easily slicing, dicing and cutting harder items like raw potatoes or carrots.

The one enormous nit I have was that the knife arrived with a less than stellar edge on it! We have our own sharpening stones so we are somewhat spoiled to having pristine edges on a regular basis; however, upon arrival, our Gourmet knife had absolutely no business in any kitchen without receiving a little attention on the stones before hand.

All things considered, I would have to say the knife may be worth the $10 if it holds up for 2 or 3 years but I honestly wouldn't purchase another one if this one was lost or damaged. From now on we're going to save our pennies and stick with the Wusthof Classic series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Loved it until it broke, November 1, 2009
This review is from: Wusthof Gourmet 3-Inch Paring Knife (Kitchen)
Great little paring knife for those with smaller hands. Tang extends 3/4 of the way into the handle and it maintains its edge well.
I purchased this on sale (but not @ as low a price as being currently offered @ Amazon) through [...] back in May 2009. It accidentally went through the dishwasher once -- hubby did the dishes-- and was knocked off the kitchen counter onto a wood floor early in the summer with no apparent damage.
Was using it this week to peel and dice a raw potato when the handle broke clean through at the last "rivet". Although it was sold with a limited lifetime warranty, I haven't been able to find the paperwork in order to return it.
I realize it is not a high end knife, but I'm still disappointed that it broke in a little over 5 months of gentle use.

5.0 out of 5 stars Got a grip on it!, January 27, 2008
This review is from: Wusthof Gourmet 3-Inch Paring Knife (Kitchen)
Great paring knife. Made in Germany. Nice, balanced feel and just the right sized and shaped handle for easy gripping. Appears to be very solidly built and durable. Information on printed paper blade sheath: high carbon, no-stain steel blade, ergonomic handle construction, hygienic and dishwasher safe. I like it.

Want a cheap knife, that doesn't act cheap?

This is your ticket. Superior steel, razor sharp, with the flexibility to also fillet fish.

Listen, no one can dispute the ruggedness, feel or longevity of a properly cared for forged blade, by the same maker or others of this quality. But if you're on a budget and your a serious home cook, you will dig this knife for smaller tasks or as a companion to chefs knife or Santoku.

Mine has sat by the sink for almost 2 years, and it stills performs and looks like new. A couple of swipes on a .99 cent crossed sticks ceramic sharpener available at any fishing supply store and it stays razor sharp and ready to go.

Be extremely careful with the edge and the point. Like all Wusthof products, this knife means business.

Fancy chopping or food processing products you see on TV, etc..? Unless you preparing large quantities of food for restaurants, etc.. save your money. 2 knives and a decent cutting board is all you need. And you don't destroy the food in the process. And please, hand wash your good knives only. The dishwasher is not a good place for serious knives for obvious reasons.

When I think Wusthof I think top of the line. I presumed this to be the case based on the reviews and the description. I was wrong:

PROS:
1. Plastic handle is corrosion and somewhat slip resistant.
2. Super sharp blade (aren't all knives sharp out of the box?)

CONS:
1. Too small. If you have big hands, look elsewhere. I want a knife with a sharp blade to fit in my hand well. This knife did not fit the bill. Looks (the image) can be deceiving.
2. Flimsy blade. The blade bends, in my opinion, too easy.
3. The blade does not extend into the knife handle fully. I suppose this would not matter too much, however, I'm sure they skimped because of cost. Also, you will never know this to be the case by looking at the image.

IN SUMMARY:
Save your money and invest in a better paring knife. Believe it or not, I have resorted back to a paring knife from this set and it works wonderfully, is sized right, the blade runs fully into the handle and the blade is thick and strong: Pinzon 16-Piece Knife Block Set.

This is a wonderful paring knife. It is sharp and stays sharp. It works beautifully and reminds me of a knife my grandmother had. Haven't had to sharpen it yet.

I was concerned about the quality of the knife when I ordered it, but I have received the knife and it is much more than what I was expecting. I'm very happy with the product and would get another.
