Typically I will spend the extra cash on Wusthof's Classic line of knives because they are not stamped, rather forged (and trust me hold a much keener edge) and as I put these knives to work 40 hours a week i need that, but in the case of serrated knives, even with heavy usage(with proper care of course), the gourmet line holds up.

That said, if you are purchasing knives for your home, i.e. light usage, and not a professional environment I would lean toward the gourmet line for all of wusthof's products.

We bought this knife for my father-in-law for Christmas and he absolutely loves it. He said that he didn't realize how bad his other bread knife was until he started using this one. We've been slowly purchasing him Wusthof knives to replace his collection. We also use them ourselves and they are great! Cooking with sharp knives makes all the difference in the world and Wusthof is worth the money.

We've owned a set of Wusthof gourmet knives for about 6 years now. All of them are non-serrated except this knife and a 5" tomato knife. I absolutely love the tomato knife, it's sharp and works beautifully. This knife however failed to keep performing.

On hard-crusted breads the rounded "serration" (which I put in quotes, because they're rounded, not pointed edges) fails to cut into the crust. The idea is the rounded blade will cut rather than tear the bread. That's fine in theory, but after a year or so of light use the blade dulled enough to be somewhat useless. The first year I would have given the knife 4-stars, but now it's a 2-star deal. Cutting through any hard-crusted bread is now an exercise in smashing the bread before the rounded edges even begin to perforate the crust. Blech.

Non-serrated knives are easily sharpened. I assume I could probably get this sharpened somewhere for half the price of the knife, but having used the equivalent Henckels (which is actually serrated and works like a champ!), why not just get a better knife to begin with?

This knife is on the lowest end of Wusthof knives with a stamped blade. Even so, the serrations are sharp, are pointed (not rounded as another reviewer described) and the knife cuts breads very well. I used this knife hard for 20 years and then one night the tang sheared in two. I was a bit surprised at this type of failure. I mailed the pieces to Wusthof and received a replacement within 10 days. No hassle. Kudos to Wusthof for honoring the warranty, even on this low-end knife.

Most of my knives are high-end Wusthof and Henkels. For chef, carving and paring knifes, I consider the extra money for the high-end knives to be worth while, since they will last a lifetime if properly cared for. Do not put them in the dishwasher. Sharpen them properly, preferably with a stone.

For a bread knife, this Wusthoff low-end knife is more-than-adequate. Sharpen it with a diamond cone-shaped hone about once a year and you'll be happy with its performance for a long, long time.

When I bought this knife my intent was to complete the set of Wusthof Knives
hanged on the magnet strip in my kitchen as I already owned a bread knife.
Once I started using the knife, it was such a joy, I gave my other bread knife away.

They sure do know how to make good knives and this one is a great value for your money.

Excellent knife for the money. My daughter is a wonderful cook and is slowly completing her collection of Wusthof knives. This was on her wish list for Christmas.

This bread knife is helping to complete a set in a knife block; it also cuts well and very good quality. This line of knives has worked well for my husband and me, and would not hesitate to buy more of this brand; Amazon has had the overall best prices on this line, so will always look here first.
