5.0 out of 5 stars Good knives for the money
By reading the previous reviews it's easy to see why they say everyone's a critic. If you buy these low price point knives expecting to get Wusthof Classic quality then you need more than a new set of knives. These are Wusthof's "Ford" and the Classics are the "Lincolns".

I have tried Wusthof Classic, Global, and Henkle Pro and Four Star II. Those "pro"...

1.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly low quality knives
Altho the product description said "lighter weight steel knives", I didn't realize just HOW light weight. I never expected this from a company like Wusthof. They feel like the first time you cut something a little bit tough, the knife could just break apart. Extremely disappointing.

Those "pro" quality knives feel much heavier and better balanced. They are made of harder steel meaning you spend less time sharpening them. If those things are important to you then go pro. If cost is your primary motivating factor then these knives are excellent.

After trying the "pro" class knives I came home and spent some time sharpening my Silverline chef and parring knives on a wet stone. With a little time/work they were back into shape. I was able to slice a hot dog in a bun without so much as a dimple on the bun. Tomatoes and carrots were cut perfectly. I do like the heavier feel of the pro knives but I just couldn't justify the cost of replacing the Silverpoints. Not for a wanna be chef like me anyway.

1.0 out of 5 stars A total disappointment from Wusthof, January 6, 2006

This review is from: Wusthof Silverpoint 10-Piece Stainless-Steel Knife Block Set (Kitchen)
The knives are poorly balanced and feel like they are going to snap when cutting harder materials (potato, butternut squash).

The blades are soft and adhesive (try to cut an onion with these knives).

Was this even made by Wusthof? I wouldn't pay $15 for this set!

The quality of this set is very poor. The handles are plastic and there is no weight. The knives are not balanced correctly. I expected these to be good quality knives but was very disappointed. This was going to be a housewarming gift, but I have decided to return it and get something else. Don't waste your time and money.

Agree with other reviewers. The blades are light weighted and fragile. The overall quality is only a little better than those sold in dollar stores.

If you are looking for something sturdy, don't waist money on the silverpoint series.

I bought these knives because of the Wusthof brand and the low price. When I first got them, I have to agree with others that I was disappointed with the plastic handles and lightness, but having lived with them for a year I'm happier than I thought I'd be. They're light, but very sharp, and if all you're doing is slicing, the lightness can actually be an advantage. They wouldn't be so great for crunching through bones (although they do chop nuts easily) and I don't know what the lightness means for their long run durability. The real question most people should ask is do they want all these knives or would they be better off just getting a higher quality chef's knife and a paring knife.

1.0 out of 5 stars Wustof Silverpoint Knives, April 13, 2006

This review is from: Wusthof Silverpoint 10-Piece Stainless-Steel Knife Block Set (Kitchen)
I recently placed an order for the Silverpoint knives and found them to be inferior to the standard Wustof line of knives. I returned them and purchased the Grand Prix II block set. The Silverpoint series was in my opinion a cheap represntation of the standard line of knives, lightweight, thin and unable to do the job. The standard series of knives which are forged in lieu of stamped are of much better quality, heftier and easier to use. I think Wustof is selling a cheap imitation with the Silverpoint series which is not worth the money. Stick with the standard knife lines you will be surprised by the difference in quality, much superior and well worth the extra money.

Not a good buy. Cheap stuff that will rust very fast. Issues with the stainless steel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Beginner Set, January 21, 2009

This review is from: Wusthof Silverpoint 10-Piece Stainless-Steel Knife Block Set (Kitchen)
For a newlywed like me, the Silverpoint line by Wusthof served me dutifully for 5 years. While I just graduated to my ultra-sharp set of global knives, the nuance and power of the forged blades would have been lost on me when I bought the silverpoints five years ago.

First: The knives are stamped, not forged, producing a lighter feel and decidedly cheap feeling handle. But don't worry, they are still miles above the generic stamped set you can get from cuisinart, et al.

Second: If you don't know which knife you need for which task, you probably don't need a high end set. Having a set like this helps you learn without worrying about trashing your expensive blade. Yes, they are thinner and lighter, but they also helped me to be more deliberate in my cutting rather than simply hacking away as I would have done with a heavier knife.

Third: Care. If you don't know how to hone your knife and can't (or won't) take them to be professionally sharpened, these knives don't wear any faster than anything fancy you would buy. Don't put them in the dishwasher, on a magnet, or expose them to heat and you'll get lots of wear out of them.

Fourth (and most importantly): Every good chef will tell you that comfort should be your determining factor in buying a knife. Some people like heavy, I prefer light -- its all personal preference. So if it feels good in your hand, its the right one for you.

If you're a true gourmet, you'll probably be disappointed by these knives, but for the novice chef (or newlywed college girl), these will serve you well for years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Silverpoint Knives, March 14, 2006
This review is from: Wusthof Silverpoint 10-Piece Stainless-Steel Knife Block Set (Kitchen)
These knives are excellent! The quality of the product you get for the money is tremendous. The knives stay sharper, longer because they are prescion cut with a laser. They are great for chopping, slicing, and carving. I love the "sandwich" knife the best. I couldn't be happier with my purchase. Plus, Consumer Reports rates Wusthof as one of the top two knife makers in the America. Very happy. Thanks Amazon.com for selling this product. I couldn't find them anywhere else!
