Product Description

Get everything you need to prepare meals in your kitchen with this affordably priced, German-made set of Wusthof Silverpoint II knives, which are precisely cut with the latest state-of-the-art laser technology. The Silverpoint II line features an ergonomically shaped, single-riveted synthetic texture molded handle that provides a good grip and balanced cutting action. This 14-piece set includes 8-inch chef, 8-inch slicing, 8-inch bread, 7-inch santoku, 5-inch serrated utility, 3-inch paring, and 3-inch clip point paring knives. It also comes with 4 steak knives (measuring 4-1/2 inches), 9-inch sharpening steel, a pair of kitchen shears, and a 13-slot hardwood storage block.

Made in Solingen, Germany--The Cutlery Capital of the World--Wusthof knives are made from a special blend of German steel and each blade is precisely tempered, which allows the knife to hold its edge for an extremely long time, yet still be able to be maintained in your home kitchen without the need to be sent away for maintenance. Wusthof also employs a unique compound angle that tapers from the spine of the knife to the edge to allow for a sturdy, yet extremely sharp edge.

Generally, the construction technique and the materials used to manufacture make all Wusthof knives dishwasher safe, but hand washing is recommended. Wash your knives with warm water and a little detergent, rinse carefully and dry with a towel. Corrosive food particles will not affect your blade if washed off directly after use. Backed by a lifetime warranty.

Silverpoint II Cutlery Series

In the culinary world variety and preparing something outstanding is the key to success. Due to this, Wusthof offers more than 350 different kinds of knives to be able to provide the perfect knife for everyone. No matter which kind of blade and handle shape you are thinking of--Wusthof has the right knife for all your needs.

Types of Blades

The Right Blade for Every Purpose

The edge is the business end of a knife. It is skillfully honed by hand and incredibly sharp. For different cutting tasks different blade shapes and edges are recommended.

The Differences:

Straight-edge blade: The straight edge allows a smooth and clean cut. When carving no fibres are torn out of the meat. This edge can be used for firm and soft food like meat, vegetables and fruit.

Serrated-edge blade: The wavy or serrated edge allows an easy cut through crusty food like a traditional roast and crispy bread.

Hollow-edge blade: When cutting an air pocket is created between the hollow edge and the slice. This prevents the food from sticking to the blade and allows for finer slices.

Modern Manufacturing

With modern manufacturing techniques, Wusthof is using laser cutting to craft its stamped knives. Laser cutting is a technology that uses a laser to cut steel in precise shapes. Laser cutting works by directing the output of a high-power laser, by computer, at the steel being cut. The material then burns away, leaving an edge with a high-quality surface finish.

The remaining processes are similar to the manufacturing of forged knives.

Stamped knives are usually thinner, lighter and lack a little of the balance of forged knives; therefore, requiring a firmer grip and more pressure when chopping and mincing. They are usually priced lower than forged cutlery, because the process can be performed at incredible speeds and reduced labor and material costs. Today, high-quality stamped knives deliver excellent cutting and ability and light-weight maneuverability favored by some cooks.

About Wusthof

A Tradition of Quality Since 1814

Since 1814, knives bearing the Wusthof name and the Trident logo have been crafted in the world's "Cutlery Capital" of Solingen, Germany. Today, in a state-of-the-art facility, that tradition of quality is ensured as old-world craftsmanship meets twenty first century production methods.

In addition to knives, Wusthof offers an assortment of cutting boards, knife blocks, kitchen tools, and scissors bearing the famous Trident logo--a symbol of form, function, and uncompromising quality.

A Commitment to the Environment

Wusthof applies sustainable practices to their production facilities: Solar panels on the roof provide electricity to their manufacturing facility, they clean and reuse water to reduce water usage, and they reuse scrap materials rather than creating waste.

My result was a savings of several hundred dollars, a knife for every occasion and only expensive knives where it will benefit me.

We purchased these after friends recommended Wusthof over Henckels because 'Wusthof doesn't make a cheap knife.' Well, I know these are the bottom of the line, but they where disappointing. The knives where flimsy, light and felt & looked cheap. We ended up returning them and spending a bit more money for a set of Henckels where were forged instead of cut, resulting in a higher quality knife (at the same price, the Wusthofs where still laser cut). It seems at this price you'd be better off spending a bit more money and looking at a different set.

These knives are a great deal. They are sharp and look great on the counter. They were given a high rating from a very well respected consumer "reports"ing agency( several points higher than costlier Victorinox). Personally I trust CR more than Cooks Illustrated, but that's just me and my opinion, go with whatever source has worked for you in the past. To me the Wusthof brand has the best name recognition and I'm a sucker for lables. There is a ton of misinformation about these knives both in product descriptions and the comments from other reviewers. So I'd like to set the record straight with the fact:

1.) These are lowest cost Wusthof Knives on the market. So users comparing them to the other Wusthof collections like the Grand Prix, Ikon Classic, Trident Classic, Henckles Twin Signature, Pros S, Global, Shun or any other more expensive set are comparing apples and oranges. If you want a heavyweight professional quality knife spend the $100 per knife, not $100 for 14 knives!

2.) These knives are Made in Germany which in my opinion is better than Made in China, they are stamped blades which do not hold an edge for as long as forged blades. However they carry a lifetime warranty so if the blade breaks, chips, etc you can send them back to Wusthof for a replacement.

3.) The handles are plastic. This is lighter in weight, HOWEVER these knives are precision balanced. The weight of a knife has nothing to do with the balance of the blade.

4.) Stamped blades are lighter than forged blades. This does not make these blades flimsy or any other adjective used by some to describe them. It simply makes them thinner and lighter. They cut the same but as noted above do not hold an edge for as long a period of time.

I have been researching knives for awhile and chose the Wusthof because of the product description. After I received them, I wish I had gone with the more popular knive sets because although they are sharp, they are also light and the handles look cheap. I am still debating if I want to send them back for a different set. I would not recommend them if you want the complete package of sharpness, weight, appearance.

We realize that these knives are not the top of the line from Wusthof and as such,our expectations weren't high. We were delighted when we received them that they perform as well as our previous set of Wusthofs',which were the Classic series. They are light,yes,but are just as sharp and cut just as well as our previous set...and were much cheaper!

I love the knifes. They are not too heavy and they are sharp and cut food without effort!
My old knifes were so bad, these are a joy to use.

I received this item as a VERY well intended gift last week and we were all shocked at how flimsy and cheap the knives were. Sure, they are sharp out of the box but on casual inspection you can see the lack of quality that went in to these knives. It's a genuine shame that a company with the reputation of Wusthof would be willing to risk branding these knives. A $30 set of Ginsu's would be a better option.

In any case, I just couldn't bear to swap out my 25-year old Chicago's for these and returned them a few days ago.

They may be OK for a first ever knive set for the college kids but certainly not for anyone with an ounce of kitchen experience.

Spend wisely - Quantity is rarely quality and here, the brand name is what you're buying.

I've had these knives for about a month now and can I would not recommend these to anyone for the following reasons:

- blade is so thin & flimsy that it feels almost like it's going to snap off in your hand if you cut thru anything dense like a potato, watermelon, beef ribs, etc.

- if you forget for one moment to wash by hand and dry right away - rust will appear! i have CHEAP knives that don't rust so quickly

- feels too lightweight in the hand

Perhaps I got what I paid for.

~~~~~~~~~~~~Update: August 5, 2012 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
These terrible knives had to be REPLACED because even after hand washing and hand drying (most of the time) they are pitted and covered in rust. They no longer seem safe to use around food.
Amazon won't take them back because the return window has lapsed. Tried taking advantage of WUSTHOF's LifeTime Warranty, but they don't take responsibility for the sub par product they advertise as "Rust Resistent".
Purchased this set after using the set from when I was married 32 years ago. In spite of all the negative reviews I really like them. They feel good in your hand, they cut well. I do alot of chopping so the chef knife was important to me. Works great. They sharpen nicely with the sharpener included. All around good set of Wusthof knives, they are not top of the line, but they were also not top of the line price. Good buy for the $$
