Editorial Reviews

Hero. Outlaw. Legend.
In a lawless world, he made his own rules.

Wyatt Earp has been portrayed in countless movies and television shows by some of Hollywood s greatest actors, including Henry Fonda, Jimmy Stewart, and more recently, Kevin Costner, but these popular fictions often belie the complexities and flaws of a man whose life is a lens on politics, justice and economic opportunity in the American frontier.

As a young man, Wyatt Earp was a caricature of the Western lawman, spending his days drinking in saloons, gambling, and visiting brothels. He gained notoriety as the legendary gunman in the shootout at the O.K. Corral in Tombstone, Arizona, but shortly after his death in 1929, distressed Americans down on their luck transformed Wyatt Earp into a folk hero. In the tradition of Annie Oakley, Buffalo Bill, and other AMERICAN EXPERIENCE Western histories, Wyatt Earp examines an ordinary man s role in that larger-than-life story, and how he became the legend that lives on today.

We've lived 25 miles from Tombstone for the past 15 years and have read many accounts of the events that led-up to and followed the OK Corral incident. This video presents historic facts in a somewhat different light than we've heard before. While most information tracks with what we learned earlier, there are several pieces we'd never heard; e.g., Ike Clanton's pact with Wyatt to identify the Benson train robbers. For that reason alone, we recommend adding this work to any collection of information about Wyatt Earp and events related to the Shootout at the OK Corral.

The video contains pretty good informative on the life of Wyatt Earp, but does not go into enough detail to really tell the story of the real Wyatt Earp. The video leaves out a lot of the events leading up to the famous Gunfight At The O K Corall. These events that were left out were events that showed the hatred of the Cowboys for the Earps and the reasons the Earps and Doc Holliday had to believe that the Cowboys were out to kill them.

Been lots of TV shows about Wyatt Earp and the real reasons for the gunfight at the OK. This PBS DVD gives you the real scoop on Wyatt and his brothers, and the true background on the gunfight at the (behind) the OK. You'll be surprised. If you are a history buff, this belongs in your DVD collection! Wyatt Earp

Absolutely fascinating. I've seen other documentaries and have read other books on the " Life and Times of Wyatt Earp", but this account appears to be the most accurate. I'm sure others may disagree; however, you have to agree that getting views from several different historians adds to the factual nature of this portrayal. I'm a huge fan of Wyatt Earp, lawman or outlaw and so apparently are the actors who played him in " Tombstone and Wyatt Earp." It's my understanding that both Kurt Russell and Kevin Costner have offspring named Wyatt.

This documentary helps to show how Earp's reputation was sanitized in 20th century media. Currently the Encore cable network's Westerns channel is airing the Wyatt Earp series starring Hugh O'Brian. Arthur Conan Doyle once wrote that real life is infinitely stranger than anything fiction can invent. Watching the "American Experience" treatment of Earp is a textbook example of Doyle's conclusion.
